Edmonton Election 2013: Who will replace Mandel?

The big question come October. Batter-batter up!

We know that Diotte has announced that he will run and there are a few others who have expressed interest in some form or another. Who looks to be promising? Who looks to be dour? Discuss!

I'm good with either Iveson, Leibovici, or Krushell running, any of them would be great successors to Mandel imo.

Ian for Mayor!

If he doesn't put his name forward, then my vote is going towards the "Buffalo Terminator"!

I like that order much better

Ian would make a great councilor for his ward... mayor, not so much. Sorry Ian

The other fun question is what other nutcases will come out of the woodwork ?

Ward 7 should be intersting with Caterina running again (he won't run for mayor), Mimi Williams who seems a little on the crazy side, and Dave Colburn, who I'll likely vote for given his staunch defence of inner city schools

Ian would have my vote, but I doubt he would win if Batty runs again.

Well, it's far too early to really know much, but enough that prognosticating is a fun exercise.

Basically, how can we really know who is likely at this point? But based on recent voting trends once a woman is actually up for a key leadership role (all four "big" provincial premiers for example), I'd put my money on an experienced woman at this juncture.

But then of course, there's all those events that will happen

I sure hope we se some new faces in the race very soon as the last thing we want is for
Diotte to gain to much momentum. Underestimating him can be a huge mistake for Edmonton. We need to remember who he caters to. We need to reach out to the younger generation and get them involved in Edmonton's future. Mandel Has worked so hard to make Edmonton a city of choice and hope for the younger generation. Lets work hard to keep it that way. Edmonton in my opinion will never be a Calgary , but rather it can be far better city than Calgary.

I'm firmly in the anyone but Diotte category. Of the current possibilities:

Leibovici - I think one of the current possible candidates from Council that has the most likelihood of continuing on with Mandel's vision.
Iveson - been very surprised by him. Young, thoughtful and articulate. The polar opposite of Diotte in my opinion.
Krushell - Take what I said about the other two above and combine them. However, I don't think she would be able to beat Diotte.

My bet is Sohi runs again as councilor.

My guess is the mayoral race will be Diotte, Iveson and Leibovici with the possibility of a darkhorse, non-council member with a bit of name recognition joining on.

Yes.

Quote:
Prior to being elected as Mayor, Mandel ran unsuccessfully for school trustee[2] He was first elected to the Edmonton City Council in 2001 as a Councillor for Ward 1. In 2004, he won an victory by defeating Edmonton's three-term mayor, Bill Smith.[1] Mandel credits his successes to the hard work and spirit of cooperation of his council.
