^Thanks.

Does anybody have an idea what might be happening with the Quad Redevelopment plans, and demolition of the admin building? Given the UofA's financial constraints lately, I hope it hasn't been shelved for a few years.

U of A administration soaks up $100M
Cash-strapped university one of the most expensive to run in Canada

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

Friday, March 26, 2010

As the University of Alberta climbed the world rankings, it also became one of the most expensive universities to run in Canada, with a budget for central administration of more than $100 million.

Today, the board of governors will likely be asked to pass a smaller budget than last year, one that is expected to include $20 million more revenue from students in the form of new $550 mandatory fees...

Dependence on public purse limits U of A growth
President says increased endowment funds best alternative to reliance on government

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

The University of Alberta can't continue to grow, even if the economy improves, without finding much more funding from sources beyond the public purse, university president Indira Samarasekera said in her "state of the union" address on Monday...

^Does not seem to be a major building retrofit, but a $5 M plan to retrofit most, if not all, of the older labs and offices in Chem West. Personally Chem East needs a retrofit. CAB needs to be recladded at least to go along with the quad redevelopment plans: new link between CAB and CEB, CAB plaza, demolition of Admin building, clock tower, gates, landscaping and other outdoor furniture.

FYI, it looks like a small telescope dome has been installed on the roof of the SW corner of CCIS. This looks very cool and will try to take some pictures today.

Was in the university area yesterday and noticed that the new Hub Mall "skylight" is visible (from 111st) starting from its south end. They're maybe 1/4 of the way along. Difficult to gauge considering how long the building is!

Walked through Hub on Saturday. Very Disappointing. So dark in there now in the areas they have replaced the skylight with darkness.

The only thing unfortunate is the selfishness of that dead asshole.

I'm sure the last thing people cramming for their exams needed was a closed library being evacuated from their units.

U of A considers ditching land lines
Some departments look to e-mail to cut 5% from budget

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

Friday, April 16, 2010

Several University of Alberta departments want to pull phone lines out of faculty offices to help balance the budget.

Some people are outraged, but it is just a sign of the times for others...
