That is very good news.

Whyte Avenue businesses struggling with high costs, few customers
Four other businesses in three-block radius of La Shish looking for new owners
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...mers-1.2949874

Quote:
When Roy Sasaine started La Shish on Whyte Avenue two years, he thought the Lebanese restaurant had the recipe for success.

But now, he’s joined a growing number of Old Strathcona restaurants and club owners who say the location is no longer as attractive as it used to be.
Quote:
Sasaine recently put La Shish up for sale. He’s not alone; at least four other businesses nearby are listed as looking for new owners. One is the Pourhouse Gastro Pub, next door to La Shish, while three others are nightclubs — DV8, the Pawnshop and Mixx Party Bar.
Maybe La Shish, Pourhouse, DV8 and Mixx failed due to oversaturation of bars and donair shops?

How do you even group those types of businesses in an article like this, bad reporting.

La Shish is ok, but not something to write home about

Pourhouse has an awesome space, but continuously underwhelms food wise.

The rest cater to a changing clientele that turnover rapidly.

Sure Whyte is going through a cycle, but to group these guys together to somehow concoct a story like this is simply poor reporting/research.

'“The city is focusing a lot on the downtown core and we’re kind of getting neglected here,” Sasaine said.

The owner of La Shish, who owns three other locations in Edmonton, said the city hasn’t provided the services that business like his need to survive — street-cleaning and parking are lacking'

For once.

The City has more street-cleaning on Whyte than i'd say anywhere else in the City so they claim.

Parking? Really.

'“We’ve had it good here for so long. And now you have to hustle,” he said.'

Good, many places on Whyte don't innovate because of this. Perhaps now they will work a little harder and we will get a few more interesting places to shop, eat, enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, I still love going to whyte and go quite often to shop, eat, drink, stroll, but this sympathy card is not working.

Shoppers Drug Mart to Test Fresh Food in its Regina Locations
http://www.retail-insider.com/retail...pers-drug-mart

Quote:
Toronto-based drug store chain Shoppers Drug Mart will use Regina, Saskatchewan, as a test market in May, putting fresh food in all eight of the retailers' larger locations. This follows the company's testing fresh food in six Toronto stores.

Regina was chosen as Canada's first city to test fresh food at Shoppers Drug Mart stores city-wide, considering its modest population and limited number of Shoppers Drug Mart stores. If successful, the concept could expand nationally, according to The Financial Post.

Toronto-based grocer Loblaw bought Shoppers Drug Mart last year for $12.4 billion, providing new retail space in various urban markets. Shoppers Drug Mart has since shed its Nativa, Simply Food and Everyday Market packaged food brands, instead focusing on Loblaw's popular President's Choice label.

According to the Financial post, about a third of the newly renovated Toronto Shoppers Drug Mart locations are devoted to fresh food, carrying "everything from avocados to air-chilled organic chickens". It's a bold move, considering substantially lower margins on food compared to other drug store categories.

Fresh food at Shoppers Drug Mart will prove hugely popular in some urban areas, some of which lack nearby grocery stores. Shoppers Drug Mart has a presence in many downtown retail plazas and if fresh food moves in, these stores will function as local grocery stores, providing benefit to both downtown workers as well as those who reside downtown.

As a result, Shoppers Drug Mart is arguably contributing to the increased livability of Canadian urban areas. Suburban areas, however, may be less receptive to buying fresh food in a drug store, especially in automobile-dependent areas where driving to grocery stores and large food-carrying retailers such as Costco and Walmart is relatively simple.
A no-brainer for the 1/2 dozen current and upcoming Shoppers in downtown* YEG**!

* colloquial downtown, not just Downtown downtown
** Edmonton, not the airport

Can't say I think its the best location. I wonder if they will be taking a portion of the Canadian Tire location as they will be relocating to their new 2-storey store in SEC? Any other intel on this?

Is there a Target in there? Or did the Zellers become a Wal-Mart?

Now there's a location that wouldn't have immediately come to mind.

Walmart.

I agree with CMD... not the best location. I wonder how sweet a deal they got?

My guess is that First Capital presented a helluva deal. It will be interesting to see where their other stores might go. Any guesses?

My guess: SW or west end, central-ish.

Whole Food will do best on the southside first, but I could see them eventually somewhere West end like Terra Losa, or Northside around Northgate. I just don't see where they would go downtown/Kingsway-ish. I hope for the arena personally.
