My money's on Fort Lauderdale (at least) to connect to the cheap Caribbean and South America flights.

Business Journal (behind a paywall) has this to say, no surprises here:

Miramar-based Spirit Airlines Inc. will host daily nonstop flights to and from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to nine major airports, including Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport (FLL) starting Feb. 14, 2019... In addition to FLL, Spirit will launch nonstop flights to and from (AUS) the following airports: Baltimore–Washington International Airport, O'Hare International Airport, Denver International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Airport, McCarran International Airport, Orlando International Airport and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Its Austin to Los Angeles International Airport nonstop flights will begin May 2, 2019.

This is of course, fantastic news.

I'll never fly them, but it opens up Austin to lower-cost service and makes it easier for leisure travel for more people to reach Austin.

Win win all around. That South Terminal is gonna need an expansion though.

Does knocking it down and putting up 32 gates in its place count?

Good for Spirit and Austin. What took so long for them to enter the market? Seems like they should’ve been here a while ago.

And no, this will not affect Delta’s plans one iota. If anything, it lends more credence to them expanding. I believe it was just a few weeks ago when a user on here cued us into two things: Delta’s plans to expand by 50% once the new gates open and a new airline entering the market. Well I’m sure this was that new airline.

I actually think Spirit will impact Frontier and Allegiant more since they (Spirit) has a more stable schedule.

Also, it looks like ViaAir is on its way out.

It doesn't tick me off, but as someone that is not familiar with airline stuff, it does get a little annoying to have to google acronyms to learn what airline and what airport is being discussed.

Yeah, I have to Google acronyms all the time. This thread is sometimes over my head, but interesting.

Still trying to find something definitive but it does look like ViaAir has shut down.

Probably, bitter sweet moment, sad to see an airline go, but they weren't exactly the best and had a bad reputation.

It's nice to see Spirit finally come and 9 destinations right off the bat daily is impressive. Hopefully they do well. If any of you guys are interested there is a new review of Spirits better seat product and it really doesn't look bad. New planes and clean interiors for cheap!

Looks like the South Terminal is now open all day, every day: http://austinsouthterminal.com/terminal-information/

This is new, I think. Extended hours to accommodate Spirit??

Also Frontier, which moves over tomorrow. They had gotten up to 6 days per week previously.

A lot of head scratching going on out in Internetland. At least one revenue flight was operated today (Orlando/Sanford to Milwaukee). One of the arrivals at AUS was from Eugene, Oregon.

Apparently the last time the AUS to Oklahoma City flight was operated was November 4.

Edit: scratch that. The Orlando-Milwaukee flight was a charter.

Honestly the reason I keep doing it is because no one ever says anything, so I figure people know what I mean.

Seriously, just ask me what the hell I’m talking about. My students do it all the time

To be fair, most of the call signs make sense, but if the logical one is taken, the airline gets a randomly generated one.

WN is non-sensical and that's because Air Namibia owns SW (they used to operate under the name Southwest something-arother) and won't give it to Southwest for an amount of money that is financially feasible.

Spirit is because SA is South African airlines.

Most of the time we are talking about AA, DL, UA and is makes total sense who you are talking about without having to google.

Southwest African Airways. Before independence (in 1990), Namibia was called Southwest Africa. AN used to belong to Ansett Australia, and apparently Air Namibia decided not to jump on it when Ansett went under.

Who used to be ZA

I still don’t even know what Allegiant is.

In other news, Via operated one flight today, to Amarillo. There might be a second (Tucson), but OKC, Tulsa, Little Rock, and Baton Rouge are all cancelled again.
