Nice updates Urbannizer! I especially like that east shot of the library.

This project is moving sooooo slow. At this pace, it seems like it may be finished by 2017 if we're lucky.

Man, until the substation gets removed, if ever, I'm kind of worried the area around the library is going to be kind of dead at night. Once the office workers at Seaholm go home, and the library closes, that area will be real sleepy at night. The main library now closes at 6 pm to 8 pm depending on what day it is. That's kind of crazy since the branches stay open until 9 pm.

Do you think that might change given that it's a new fancy building, likely with lots of new programs? I especially think it might considering that more people are living downtown and it's in a prominent location. Hopefully won't be a dead area.

An 80-seat restaurant is slated for the 2nd Street side (link), which is going to have to draw evening business to be viable, unless they're going to avoid dinner service entirely.

Although it'll keep a separate schedule, when coupled with the other public meeting areas included in the space, and the effort that's been invested to make it an appealing gathering place for more than just the homeless, I cannot imagine anyone seriously thinking of it closing at 6.

This new building is to Faulk as . . . choose your own diametrically opposed example.

Fingers crossed that the vision of the Library as a meeting and gathering place will result in different use and hours that a traditional Library......

I'm pretty sure the retail will give it a boost. And I'm thinking the other activities there at the library will push the hours later. The homeless population over at Faulk may also be a reason for the earlier closing. None of them have ever bothered me while I was there, but I could see how families might be bothered by it after dark I guess.

Keep in mind grocery retail at Seaholm, not to mention Seaholm residences themselves.

as a new rule required for safety. All construction workers on the site of the new library must crawl around on their hands and knees.

The March Library Director's Report says it's been "fast paced" this month.
Quote:
The New Central Library Project has been a very fast paced endeavor for all concerned during the month of March, 2015, both from the point of view of managing construction activities as well as the planning and coordination perspective. The placement of FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer) topping slabs on multiple levels of the building continues to progress well. Such composite topping is designed to increase the strength of the underlying slab. Additional, ongoing construction activities at the site include: construction of CMU (concrete masonry unit) walls at stairs, spraying insulation on ceilings, installing rain water pipes, erection of support framing, building the parking garage ramp, setting the heat exchanger and installing the chill water connection.

It's pretty inane to try to blame the workers. This is a very complex building with details everywhere. The GC is ahead of schedule and that's all that matters. They will only hire as many people as it takes to meets deadlines as any business would do. Any worker would be proud to say they worked there. Blame yourself for being too impatient.

I took his comment to mean something entirely else than you apparently.

Apparently...It was made by someone who has no concept of construction or architecture.

I'm always relaxed. I just know a lot of people view this and don't want anyone to believe the timetable has anything to do with worker strength. It doesn't.

Right. I laughed too. I took it as a slap to the city's bureaucracy and because (as we have commented before) that the library construction has been crawling along much more slowly than it's neighbors.
