From my opinion, it's one thing to demolish a great building to attempt to built a larger, more dense building when you are in NYC, Chicago, but it's another thing entirely to demolish a great building and replace it with a lowrise or a parking lot. Or in Detroit's case, because you have to demolish a great building as it's falling down on it's own.

Most of these barely qualify as highrises (and some don't even qualify as that), but it's a diverse group.

Just found out about this one recently: Hotel Newhouse in Salt Lake City. Crowned with a massive light-up sign with its name, it was 12-stories and 400 rooms, built in 1912.

It was demolished in 1983 to be replaced eventually by a parking lot.

During the 1980s, the hotel was becoming unsafe and expensive to maintain. Ownership of the Hotel had passed to Little America Hotel Corp., a company owned by Earl Holding. Behind the LDS Church, Holding was the 2nd largest landholder in Salt Lake. He was an interesting man who made his wealth in Little America Wyoming and Sinclair Oil. Holding owned many things, including the ski resort of Sun Valley Idaho and the competitor Inn: Salt Lake’s Little America Hotel just south of the Hotel Newhouse.

Soon after he acquired the grand old Hotel Newhouse he made plans to destroy it.

The parking lot that replaced it is at the bottom left in this photo:
