No where near dead. It was announced just two months ago. Construction is set to begin in the spring.

Very exciting news on this development today.

Quote:
The $280 million, LEED Certified building will be a unique addition to the city as the property will house two distinct hotels–a four star, luxury destination hotel and a three star extended-stay hotel. The extraordinary structure is slated to rise 50 stories and rank as the 5th tallest building in the city of Philadelphia.

The 5th tallest in the city would put it somewhere between 740 and 790 feet and it will be taller than Three Logan Square (Bell Atlantic) and slightly shorter than BNY Mellon Center

If it were to eclipse the 700' mark it would stand out so much in the area that it would be located. It would be a huge positive for growth in the city and a welcomed addition to the skyline.

Before I get my hopes up, is this just more lazy journalism wherein height is based on number of stories ? Still tall, mind you.

Hope not, the developers website claims it will be the 5th tallest in the city. Sooo hoping they know what they are talking about lol.

50 floors would make it the 6th tallest anyway if they were going by floor count.

I'm sure we'll all hate the first rendering. There have been enough proposals down the pipeline over the years to make us all take developer's numbers with a grain of salt and if you don't you should.

The design I'm very much interested in. W Hotels tend to not be staid, boring structures.

I would be very surprised if it isn't the same grey glass box that every building in every city has used as a model in the last 5 or 6 years. Think 2116 Chestnut, probably without the balconies, and taller. I really believe it is an economy move. It's ok, we don't have too many of them yet.

Update on this today

Quote:
A $280 million, 50-story hotel project planned for 1441 Chestnut Street will house a four-star luxury W Hotel; a three-star, extended-stay Element hotel by Westin; 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, including a restaurant; an outdoor pool and bar; meeting space; and a spa and fitness center. There will be two lobbies, the W at street level and the Westin Element a short elevator ride up. Both brands are owned by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Brook J. Lenfest, the developer, is aiming to have the project be LEED-certified. Subject to all components of financing coming together, construction could start in late spring or early summer.

I have a feeling this layout, one hotel stacked on top of another, is what will give this tower a guaranteed decent height. Considering the similar, if a little bland in design, Marriott combo (Courtyard/Residence Inn) currently under construction in Midtown Manhattan, this will stick out. Even in a crowded skyline like New York, that slender new tower is quite visible. Not to mention this building will be in a great location. Go Philly!

Cope Linder has FINALLY updated their website to say W/Element. The floor count is 58 floors it looks like. There are no new renders yet (still the Waldorf-Astoria design), but it is nice to know they are officially working on it.

http://www.cope-linder.com/index.html

From my calculations, with floor heights of 10 feet and two lobbies, the height will be 634 feet. It could be higher though of course.

Wondering when this will be beginning work. I haven't heard about it in a long time.

It looks like some legal matters have tied it up.

So I don't wanna give too much away, but there's a decent chance this breaks ground next year. Most of the financing is in place, zoning is approved, but they're looking for state/city funding to get them across the finish line. Stay tuned.

Is the set up/height still as proposed?
