I always say that one of the biggest mistakes Saint John has made in the past half century was allowing UNBSJ to move into the Tucker Park campus. Both the university and city have suffered from the distance between the core of the city and the academic centre. Rather than having a commuter campus that is mainly utilized from 9 to 5, they could have had a campus that was full of life all day and into the night. An Uptown campus could have benefitted various faculties through its proximity to the public library and archives as well as improving the relationship with the financial offices in the city core. Not to mention all the associated businesses and services that could have been sustained by having a few thousand more people Uptown every day. I guarantee that had UNBSJ been located Uptown, it never would have gone through this polytechnic fiasco either.

I understand their were issues of land availability, but a little creative thought could have really saved us from the less-than-ideal situation we are in today.

A couple different angles on Saint John by a photographer friend of mine (taken within the last week or so):

In this first photo, you can see the big pile of rubble that is the site for the new Courthouse

This angle makes the Irving building look a bit more integrated into the Uptown skyline. Also, it is fun to imagine what the this view will look like when the Coast Guard site gets developed.

At first glance the warehouses look like they're rectangles photoshopped into the photo.

Nice finds, I like how this one's progressing.

As if this thread didn't already have enough photos of the Saint John skyline (we are obsessive aren't we? ) Here are a few more that are taken from the city's Vision 2015 information that was/is online (I lost the link, sorry). I know they are a bit touristy (and frankly a little out of date), but I think they add some interesting perspectives on the skyline.

Heres my personal rankings of the skylines of Atlantic Canada:

For Density:

1. Halifax
2. St Johns
3. Saint John
4. Fredericton
5. Moncton

For "Interestingness"

1. Halifax (you just cant beat it in any way )
2. St. Johns, a great variety of new and old buildings and beautiful scenery...it cant miss
3. Saint John, although many of the building in the core look much the same you have to give it props for historical value, density, height and a great setting
4. Moncton, although not the densest city in the area, it does have a varied and interesting skyline in its own right with two of the three tallest structures being a telecommunications tower and a church.
5. Fredericton, a great city and downtown, but it lacks definition, I find it looks very uniform from a distance...that will change though.

Gotta say, my opinion on Moncton's downtown is improving. Fredericton's downtown certainly has more depth, Moncton has a lot more large buildings. As well, Moncton's are a lot more concentrated, especially around the Assumption building, BCC, city hall and Moncton Place.

That aside, The rest of your list seems pretty accurate.

For smaller cities, Charlottetown and Sydney also have interesting skylines.

Yeah, I guess in terms of a dense looking skyline Monctons is probably moreso than Freddy, I was more thinking in terms of when I walk around in both cities Freddy seems more dense...Im confusing things in my own list! hahaha...both have great downtowns though
