Has there been any movement (permits, site clearing, etc) for McHugh's planned hotel at 111 E Cermak?

I happened to be in the area this afternoon and snapped a few pictures. I posted them in the Chicago General Developments thread.

I love how the stunted "L" shape design now has a giant ass concrete sheer wall on the entire Eastern face of the wing. It's not like rooms with an uninterupted lake view would command a premium or anything...

The wing extends right up to the property line on that side and abuts the future data center tower. Only way to have windows facing that way would have been to delete 2 rooms in order to have a reasonable setback, and that view would have only been temporary.

10 floors to go plus the crown if I counted right? Hopefully the data center gets the green go, cuz that NE corner of the block will look really funky with a dirt lot next to those blank walls they have right now.

Does anyone know if there will be some kind of covering on the concrete slap of a wall on the east side of the tower or is that just going to remain a blank painted wall? Guessing it was left as a blank wall due to future development on the lot next to it but wasn't sure.

I think the exposed concrete on this project is just being painted. Painting is already in process on the blank east wall of the ballroom podium.

Is that part of this phase, is it mostly speculative, or is it something in between?

From the webcam it looks like the jumps between roof elevations on the event center will not have windows. WTF?!? What is the purpose of this overly complex design then?

I'm sure DePaul will seek to play mainly night games to boost attendance. Natural lighting in an arena is probably unnecessary.

It looks like the roof structure was maintained to give the roof some of the spatial qualities of a dome (this may desirable for acoustic reasons as well) and the ridgelines of the structure will be called out with lighting.

Additionally, they may add lighting to the outside so surrounding buildings aren't looking out at a giant flat roof...

One last thought, the webcam shows the south face of the arena but you generally avoid having roof monitors point south, to avoid the glare of direct sun. Maybe they're only doing glass on the north-facing ridgelines...

As an FYI, there is now an OXBlue camera on the inside of the arena. Three cams. Cool to watch. https://app.oxblue.com/open/clarkcon...mccormickplace

Talking with one of the guys in the design crew awhile ago, he said the focal point of the building would be the exterior over the interior. Alot of glass showing alot of open mezzanine interior, alot of light, exterior digital screens and signage. We want to make that whole area more inviting I believe he quoted. I responded by saying I didnt'd realize Chicago decided on this to be their "Time Square". Woof.
