I used to think SW Ontario had the best towns, but after doing some exploring in Eastern Ontario they really just feel that much more substantial - better landscapes too. A few more to add:

i tend to like the college towns, with i think my favorite being athens, georgia.

for ohio its hard to pick against super charming, hippy yellow springs, which was also a small college town. or oberlin, its ne ohio radical small college town twin, for the architecture and culture.

outside of what, the crappy hood part of bridgeport, you generally cannot go wrong with smalltown anywhere along the coast from nyc to boston. noank or stonington? the cape? come on. its nice.

for an outsider coastal pick, i am pulling for brunswick, ga. i love that little, sleepy, old, raw downtown strip and the homes nearby. i kinda like wilmington, nc too.

so many places -- its way too hard to choose!

I don't really have a favorite that I can narrow it down to but I do love Rhinebeck, NY and Shepherdstown, WV.

1. Trinity -an old English village a few hundred. One of the more touristy parts of the province.

2. Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove - a thousand or so people in a suburban fishing village just outside the capital.

3. Francois - a little Irish village of a couple dozen, one of the few remaining on our south coast without roads/cars.

The best small towns in Arizona are mining towns turned hippie/artist enclaves. Someone mentioned Jerome earlier. I'll give a shout to Bisbee, AZ. Population ~5,500.

I mentioned Bullhead City, AZ. It's definitely worth a visit if you're visiting Vegas, Laughlin or the State Line (Primm) casinos.

Midcoast and Downeast Maine have the best small towns: Camden, Bath, Wiscasset, Boothbay / Boothbay Harbor, Belfast, Bar Harbor...

In Quebec, on the Lower North Shore, the tiny town of Tadoussac, a trading post dating back to 1600. Good food. Nice people.

Les Éboulements and Baie St-Paul in Charlevoix. Across the St Lawrence; Rivière-du-Loup and Kamouraska.

In the Eastern Townships; Brome Lake-Knowlton, North Hatley, Sutton.

Vermont; Craftsbury Common; a tiny town built around a common where every single house is white clapboard and green shutters. A true blue Vermont prototype of a pristine hamlet. It's almost corny. Montpelier; the smallest State Capital in the US with a surprisingly vibrant.little downtown.

Nova Scotia; Lunenburg and Peggy's Cove.

California: (a State in the Western United States of America)
San Luis Obispo, Carmel, Laguna Beach, Stinson Beach.

In the US, Idaho Springs, CO is charming.

But we have nothing on the small towns in the Swiss Alps... (places like Wengen or Zermatt).

I am sure New England has some incredible gems...but I've never ventured that far north(sad, I know).

I think Eureka Arkansas(pop 2,000) is a nice town.

I've always had this weird interest in Bisbee. Then in the military, I met a dude from there and he made me want to go even more. Some places you just can't explain in words why they seem so attractive...

Mt. Dora, Florida. It's a charming, artsy town on a hill overlooking a huge lake. It's just outside of Orlando.

i was in mendocino over the weekend. as touristy as it is, it has an absolute buck-wild feel...new england old west town (?) meets a kansas plain (in front of a pacific northwest forest) slamming into the pacific
