I still plan on responding to a post made awhile ago though I had completely forgotten about it. Another day.

In other news(that I don't like), in case anyone didn't know, the freeway portion of the HDC has been canceled or rather put on an indefinite hold. Many here should be happy. San Diego backing out on long planned freeway projects, 710 tunnel canceled and 710 south expansion being put on hold indefinitely, and now this.

Roads compromise wins passage at SANDAG

Last week a coalition of cities led by Escondido Mayor Paul McNamara and Poway Mayor Steve Vaus, but with a strong assist from Supervisors Kristin Gaspar of the 3rd District and Jim Desmond of the 5th District persuaded the SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) board to reprioritize some monies for the roads.

Before Friday’s vote the staff had proposed a set of priorities that moved a large share of funding from TransNet that had been approved by the voters for road improvements for Hwy 78 and Hwy 67 to mass transit. This had fomented something of a revolt among cities that were affected by the vote.

At Friday’s vote the board voted to include $600 million on a spending plan to could add new lanes to Hwy 67 and 78 and prioritize improvements for Hwy 52.

After the vote Gaspar commented, “The vote represented a huge win for our coalition. By allocating the necessary funds to the 67, the 78 and the 52, we have taken a big step in the right direction. I am cautiously optimistic, but we must remain vigilant to ensure our priority projects are completed.”

A lot of new information on the Crenshaw Northern extension at the next West Hollywood City Council meeting. The alignments under consideration new include a hybrid of the San Vincente and Fairfax alignments, more underground sections for the alignments, including the La a Brea alignment now fully underground.

It would be nice to see E and one of the other alignments. There is no technical reason why the Crenshaw Line can't have two different routes on it.

- Since opening in 2012, Metro's Expo Line has stood out as a rare success at time in which transit patronage has declined in Los Angeles County. But the light rail line, which runs predominantly at-grade between Downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica, is frequently forced to stop for cross traffic at 22 ungated intersections along its route. But a fix may finally be in the works, according to a motion introduced last week by Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike Bonin. --- The motion, if adopted, would instruct the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to maximize signal priority for the Expo Line at street crossings and report back to the City Council within 60 days on strategies to speed end-to-end travel times and improve on-time reliability by 90 percent.

Maybe I missed this earlier, but it looks like the Expo line shaved 1 minute off of it's earlier schedule, with 46 minutes eastbound and 47 minutes westbound vs 47 minutes and 48 minutes before. Hopefully they can shave off enough with the Bonin signal priority/preemption motion to get the end-to-end time down to 40 minutes. That would make the travel time truly competitive with cars during non-peak hours, and a clear winner during peak hours.

This is exciting, construction on the Crenshaw line is really moving along.

Train testing underway on southern part of Crenshaw/LAX Line

"The Crenshaw/LAX Line reached a nice milestone this past week with the beginning of train testing on a 1.4-mile segment of track adjacent to LAX — the southernmost part of the project. Check out the above video.

In that segment, trains are now being powered by the overhead wires and reaching regular speeds. Signal and systems testing began in September, when a train first traveled from the Green Line tracks onto the new Crenshaw/LAX Line tracks. The overall project is 93 percent complete and we’re definitely seeing progress — although there is still work, testing and training to be done..."

The feasibility report for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor is complete. The report suggests that using a single-bore tunnel would help resolve issues with ventilation shafts and cross-passage mining under the mountains.

Study finds Metrolink's rail system rebuild will create 1.3M jobs

Southern California can expect an economic boost of 1.3 million jobs and an increase to the gross regional product of almost $684 billion through 2050 as the result of Metrolink’s Southern California Optimized Rail Expansion (SCORE) Program, according to a new Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) study. LAEDC presented the findings at a meeting of the Metrolink Board of Directors.

SCORE is a 10-year, $10 billion capital improvement program to upgrade regional rail infrastructure to better and more safely serve Southern California residents in the future while improving commute times and air quality in advance of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games. Improvements include track additions and enhancements to stations, signals, and grade crossings that will bolster safety and enable more frequent, bi-directional service throughout the day.
