Adding a bit . . .

Willard George's:

LA Times, 10/10/1920

In due course, they moved to the corner of Wilshire and Catalina:

But all good things must end (after another move):

LA Times, 11/19/1958

Halbriter's:

LA Times, 4/15/1923

It appears that its building is still nicely intact:

Egyptian Salt Water Swimming Club:

LA Times, 7/20/1924

Thanks for the quick response HossC and odinthor.

If I remember correctly there is an extant Egyptian inspired apartment building (also from the 1920s) in Hollywood but I don't remember the street it's on.

I bring it up because I wonder if the architect of the apartment building was also the architect for the proposed Egyptian Salt Water Swimming Club, A. C. Martin.

I'm going to jump in the google-mobile to see if I can find the apartment building.

I'm not finding a Mesa Drive in Los Angeles, but Crenshaw Blvd was originally called Angeles Mesa Drive, which turns up plenty of interesting stuff. (There was a bit of discussion about Angeles Mesa Drive here on NLA back in 2013 and elsewhere.)

There's the 1925 Karnak Apartments at 5617 La Mirada Avenue and the 1926 Ahmed Apartments at 5616 Lexington Avenue. The architect of both was J M (John Manley) Close, who also designed the 1930 Amasis Apartments at 747 Wilcox Avenue (the only one of the three to retain most of its original external features). Moving away from Hollywood, another of Close's Egyptian creations is the 1928 Osiris Apartments at 430 S Union Avenue in the Westlake neighborhood.

Flyingwedge covered some of A. C. Martin's Egyptian themed apartments some years back.

Of course the discovery of King Tut's tomb in the early 1920s led to a brief worldwide mania in Egyptian fashion, architecture, etc. These apartments were a result. Syd Grauman's Egyptian theater another. Probably the Mummy film in 1932 was another. When the treasures of King Tut came to America in 1978, there was another brief revival of Egytophilia. Remember Steve Martin on SNL singing King Tut?

In the '20s the supposed "curse of King Tut" was also widely talked about, how many of the people who unearthed the tomb died early. Lord Carnarvan who financed Carter's discovery dig died of an infection from a mosquito bite after visiting the newly opened tomb, etc. I guess the sinister Mummy film was a result.

I happened upon this photograph of a newspaper stand a few days ago on ebay.

"1932 Photo HOLLYWOOD LOS ANGELES NEWSSTAND Weird Tales TARZAN Times STOREFRONT"

eBay

I believe this is the outdoor newstand on Las Palmas Ave. just south of Hollywood Blvd.

Here

check it out Here

Let's take a closer look at the 1932 merchandise.

detail

I see Gandhi is up to something.

I'm confused by the Native American advertising Bromo-Seltzer.

The check-out table resembles a still life.

detail

I believe the small cloth on top of the register is being used to block the sun from numbers on the register.

Postcards and an advertisement for Cosmopolitan.

I think those little heads are movie stars. I wish we could tell who they are.

AFC?

Found it:

Beverly Hills Confidential

The linked page also contains a mix of black-and-white and color postcards of stars homes, which don't exactly correspond to the headshots on the envelope.

And on a related point - nobody yet has found the address of Edd Byrnes' house in Coldwater Canyon.

A couple of the women might be Joan Crawford, but too blurry to say for sure. Pretty sure the woman on the lower left with the pageboy bob is Colleen Moore, not Louise Brooks. Gloria Swanson may be just to the upper left of Keaton. Mary Pickford might be right of Gilbert and left of Garbo but there is a fold in the map.

I just happened upon a group of original photograph on eBay. The seller says the photos were taken in 1914.

They're AMAZING!

I'm going to start with my favorite one.

eBay

Pretty cool, huh

Here's the group as seen on eBay
.

eBay

I've enlarged some of the others that I'll post tomorrow. (it's way past my bedtime)

Oh, I almost forgot! :

Here is what's written on the back of the photographs.

Ratcliff Apts. 1329 W. 5th St. L. A.

Ok, here's one more before I hit the hay. This one is being sold individually.

eBay

I have no idea what we're looking at.

The reverse.

I wonder if they're referring to the Ratcliff Apts.

G'night folks.

If I had to guess, the rolling hilly terrain looks like El Sereno or Highland Park area, or somewhere nearby.

The eBay description says View from Bunker Hill looking west. Think that's one of the big streets that goes through a tunnel?

My guess is that we're looking northeast towards where Vista Hermosa Park is now, with a view of the still-existing flatiron building at Toluca & Douglas.

A closer look.

The building has hardly changed since the 1914 photograph!

Here is the photograph that was turned vertically in last night's post.

I don't believe we will ever know the location. There are simply not enough clues.

A larger view of the fine looking residential street. I think might be West 5th Street. (also from last night's post)

I've been trying to figure out what that is along the curb.

This

detail

Could it be something left behind by the guy in the wagon?
