“I started to hear from other swim clubs in New Brunswick and PEI and elsewhere in Nova Scotia that we don’t have any facility in the region,” said Mason
"C'mon, Halifax, it's time for you to build us a pool!"

Might be a good opportunity for Moncton to usurp Halifax with a proper pool facility?

They should have built a 50 m pool at the Canada Games Centre while they had the chance instead of a 25m pool.

Saint John has the only other 50 m competition pool in the Maritimes outside of the Centennial thanks to the legacy of the Canada Games, so if HRM drops the ball we'll gladly take the business

It's likely the only facility that will be seeing investment/expansion any time soon too, and is already built and functional. Sadly 50 m pools are incredibly expensive and having one per province(s) is the only realistic expectation.

Agreed. A typical Halifax/NS problem of saving a little money now, only to have to pay far more later as a consequence of the shortsightedness…

This is still playing out now with other issues, like our lack of investment in transit infrastructure, etc.

It’s good to know that Saint John had the foresight to build a proper pool facility. Hopefully other Maritime teams can take advantage of it until their own provinces can build theirs (if they do). Saint John isn’t that far for most of the Maritime teams (except maybe Cape Breton?), and it’s a nice city to visit or create a base for training (for serious contending teams with a budget and commitment to the sport).

No kidding! Poorest planning decision since building the Macdonald Bridge with only two lanes. Sometimes it seems as if lack of foresight and inability to see what's staring us in the face are in government's DNA around here.

Mason showing the charm and open-mindedness for which he is famous.

Halifax actually has two at the moment.

I'm confused. We do? Then why are swim clubs telling Mason that we don't?

Or are those two not up to competition spec?

Centennial badly needs upgrades, and Dalplex, though much newer, is less widely available to the public and apparently (for technical reasons I don't recall - maybe someone else here can enlighten us) is not up to current competition standards.

I was only ever peripherally a member of the swim community (my daughter was a competitive swimmer for several years), but it seems quite apparent to me that a city of this size would get good use out of two 50m pools. In other words, refurbish and keep Centennial, and build a new one besides. It really grinds my gears that the city didn't opt to do that when they built the Canada Games Center.

Absolutely agree, shortsighted. It also would have been nice to outfit the John Lindsay YMCA on South Park with a 50-metre pool instead of the 25-metre there now, but I'm more forgiving of the choice to go smaller there, given what I'm guessing was a more constrained land footprint.
