There's a school of thought that says, "If the audience is looking at the scenery/set/props, you're doing something wrong."

My school of thought is, "If the professionals you've hired are messing up, you've hired the wrong people."

ziffrenlaw

Designed by Matlin and Dvoetsky. Originally covered in bronze glass, the building was artfully reclad by Barton Myers Associates.

Am I correct in recalling that the reason the building got reclad in the first place was because of the 1994 earthquake?

I don't know. The Barton Myers write-up doesn't give a reason except to say they were "engaged to renovate the building so that it read as an entirely new structure" (the work was done in '96). It's still totally recognizable, but was brought out of the 70s and made into something light, airy and new. I miss that green lit "Carlsberg" sign at the top though. Seeing that meant we were almost home. The structure still functions as a gateway to the neighborhood, signaling that one is past all the Beverly Hills/ Century City nonsense.

Here's today's Julius Shulman post. It's "Job 1490: Pereira & Luckman, Western Geophysical Co. of America, 1953". I'm intrigued by "Research Laboratories & Shops" above the door.

The other shot shows the whole front of the building.

Both from Getty Research Institute

The 1956 CD lists the Western Geophysical Co lab & shops at 923 N La Brea Avenue. The March 2014 image (below) shows the building intact and in the hands of Mole-Richardson, a stage lighting company founded in 1927.

GSV

Like the Citibank building at Wilshire and La Cienega from a few days ago, we've only just lost this well-preserved building. The GSV image from later in 2014 shows the building being demolished. It looks like the replacement was completed very recently.

GSV

Mole-Richardson also occupied the old ModernCraft Laundry building across the street. The tragic demise of that building was covered here in 2014 - Beaudry's post #22011 was the first one I found. The developers were quick to knock down the Morgan, Walls & Clements structure, but the site is still empty. Here's a 2011 reminder of what was lost.

I remember that post Flyingwedge. It was terrific. Roehrigs certainly get no respect. They're often torn down without a thought

Maybe we just don't get it? Of course the difference between Rauschenberg and the developers is that Rauschenberg only did it once. There aren't museums full of destroyed artwork for us to admire and ponder over.

BRR, there's enough in that ONE post for 4 or 5 posts.

I feel many of the fine photographs you posted deserve discussion, but will be overlooked because it's all so overwhelming.

Just my opinion.

Let me return briefly to 'Bay District Motorcycles'.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aWWlul47h6...black+prince+3

Take a look at this very cool lighter/keychain. (Jack Baldwin owned Bay District Motorcycles)

http://www.antiquesnavigator.com/d-2...in-50s-la.html

It sold for $31

Although...the address on the lighter is slightly different. 2705 on the lighter...2703 on the decal below.

The SW corner is where the Pavilions is now (the map's turned around). I couldn't find a thing I could connect with HN Rust, but good luck :-)

Thanks t2

Here's an impressive photograph I found a few days ago on etsy. (I believe we've seen a similar view on NLA, but not this particular photo)

"1950s Long Beach California"

https://www.etsy.com/listing/5135744...=sr_gallery_31

It looks like it was taken after a rain. I spy a sailor on the corner. (is that you CBD?)

And what's that above the Parking entrance on the right? the only thing that comes to mind is two chevrons.

I completely agree. Great pictures, but too many at once. I made it 32 plus the one in the quote. Spread them over a few posts and at least a couple of days so we can enjoy them all!

I've just worked through most of them, and many are still standing. Here's a selection.

This one was probably the biggest surprise to find intact.

All of the Ocean Front Walk locations are difficult to compare because the Googlemobile doesn't go there. Instead, you're at the mercy of amateur pictures taken from the beach. On the right, the Winn apartments now have a mural down the side. On the left is where the Montezuma Apartments were - I'm not sure if it's the same building. On the far left, the Hotel Cadillac is still standing.

Here's a 1955 aerial view of Long Beach that I found recently. I think it's also new to the thread.

Remember the slides of the 'Little Country Church' from earlier this week?

The seller on ebay also offered these slides.

'Silk Stockings' is showing at the Pantages

Park LaBrea in the 1950s.

Look! Gold of Ophir roses!

The last two slides show two modernist homes.

It appears the garage was a later addition. (it doesn't have the same aesthetic as the home)

Does anyone recognize these homes?

Hoss might have already taken us on a tour of them via his Julius Shulman photographs.

I'm kidding about the Gold of Ophir roses.

Thank you for this one. The way the shoreline changed in Long Beach, especially as regards the Ocean Center building, is a discomforting amazement. One used to step from it directly onto the sand. I'm always half-convinced that the building blew inland. Most disorienting:
