Despite challenges in raising money and gaining state approval, University of Houston officials are still set on opening a medical school - possibly by 2019 - on the flagship southeast Houston campus.

With the University of Texas opening two new medical schools in 2016 and at least two other public universities - the University of North Texas and Sam Houston State University - also pushing for medical schools, another in Houston would be a "tough sell," Raymund Paredes, the state's top higher education official, said in an interview this week.

Groundbreaking Held for COH/Harris County Joint Processing Center

HOUSTON -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and other city and county officials break ground on a joint inmate processing center that will consolidate and streamline all local inmate booking processes into one facility.

The $100 million processing center - to be built north of Buffalo Bayou downtown and next door to the county's Baker Street Jail - will be built with bonds approved by county voters in November 2013. Construction will require no tax increase; the county will pay off the bonds with savings produced by the new facility's operation.

The 246,000-square-foot Joint Processing Center is expected to be complete by the end of 2017.

500 micro-units planned for Ivy Lofts. Glad to see this concept is being pushed for Houston. Great location as it's only a few blocks from downtown. Construction expected to start by Summer 2016.

Houston-based Novel Creative Development LCC is in the final stages of planning a new modern-living project east of downtown.

The 24-story development, known as the Ivy Lofts, will be home to some of Houston's first "micro-unit" condominiums and is slated to begin construction next summer. The 1.4-acre property is located at the corner of Leeland and Live Oak streets and will contain 500 micro-units, with first-floor retail.

Houston-based Powers Brown Architecture designed the plans for the building. Re/Max Inner Loop is handling the sales for the project, which are expected to begin in February.
