An Easter visit home to Halifax, Nova Scotia

My family was having a 'second Christmas' because a cousin was trapped in London, England during Christmas time (due to the snow). So I took the opportunity to take some photos, I hope you enjoy.

For those of you who don't know about Halifax; the population is currently 403,100 and this is the Provincial capital of Nova Scotia. You can find out more here.

Pier 21 - National Historic Site (where immigrants landed to enter Canada)

Cunard Centre Conference Centre and more of the Seaport

The historic Halifax Hotel (now the Westin Halifax)

The Halifax Train Station and the new Via Rail Renaissance Cars

The new Halifax Seaport Farmers Market - a LEAD building.

One of the living walls in the Farmers Market

Award winning Nova Scotia Wine!

Scenes from some of the balconies in the market:
McNab's Island

Tug

Downtown Dartmouth

George's Island

Upper deck of the Market - with the green roof growing in

The Westin

The Cunard Statue - memorial to the Cunard Line.
The building in the background under construction is called 'The Vic'.

The Vic

Now around the Market - Garrison Brewery
(good local beer)

Pavillion 20 - part of the market

Another look at the market and Pavillion 20

This is a former coal power generation station that was decommissioned by NS Power in the 90's. It is now under renovation to become NS Power's Headquarters, another LEAD project.

Seaport Map

The weather took a change (typical) and became cloudy and foggy for most of my stay - loved it! Here are some photos out and about in the grey!

George's Island

NS Power Office (under construction)

Bishop's Landing Mixed Use Development

Looking down Lower Water Street - into the Downtown Office Core of Halifax

The Maritime Centre (in the background) and the empty lot that will eventually contain the new Brewery Residential tower

The Alexander Keith's Brewery

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
(has wonderful exhibits on the Titanic, considering parts of the Titanic movie were shot here and many of the graves are located here)

The Old Post Office Building (Home of Public Works and Government Services Canada)

Looking up Prince Street (with the Old Triangle Pub on the left side)

Looking up George Street through Parade Square at the Old Town Clock and the signals from the historic Citadell Fort

Cable Wharf

Nova Scotia Crystal (Where you can watch them blow the crystal during the summer!)

Theodore Tug Boat (a kids TV show from the CBC - with a life sized Theodore)

Historic Properties

Cows Ice Cream - from PEI; but awesome none the less - wasn't open yet for the tourism season

The Lower Deck - awesome pub and good grub!

Ferry to Dartmouth

Historic Properties with Purdy's Towers 1&2 in the background

Downtown Halifax

Navy Dockyard

Approaching Dartmouth and Alderney Landing

King's Wharf - new mixed use/pedestrian community on the former Marine Slips land in Dartmouth (under construction)

Downtown Dartmouth

Old Dartmouth City Hall

Looking up Portland Street

George's Island and Halterm Port from Dartmouth

Halifax from Dartmouth

NS Power Office/Westin and The Vic

Some of the homes across from the Park - North West Arm

On my way back to my mom's place - I caught the VIA train coming in from Montreal (the Ocean)

On my way back to my mom's place; I decided to drive up Citadell Hill and take a few photos.

Part of the DT Office core. I used to lived in the brown Apt building in the foreground.

Metro Centre (arena) and Town Clock

Looking down at part of the Halifax Common's (where the Canada Games skating oval was being turned into a permanent skating facility)

More of the Commons

Navy Docks and the MacDonald Bridge

The McKay Bridge and the Messes from CFB Stadacona

Downtown Dartmouth from Citadell Hill

King's Wharf from Citadell Hill

A couple photos taken from the new subdivision my mom's condo is located in (Royale Hemlocks)
Fairview cove container terminal and the towers from DT peaking over the hill

Some of the locals enjoying the last undeveloped condo building lot on my mom's street

Finally - a few pictures from the airport before I left.
Domestic Check-in area and the empty lot (where a hotel will be built - far right)

New parkade and expanded arrivals area

A US Airways Regional Jet departing for Philly - a new service to YHZ

The Central Hall - with hometown boy Syd the kid Crosby

Some ramp action

Part of the renovated upper corridor to the US Check-in. YHZ now has a US Customs clearance - which is great! Lower level is the corridor to the domestic arrivals area.

The US Check-in area - no flights leaving when I was there.

Domestic arrivals (to the right (under the upper level); International Arrivals (at the top of the picture) and the steps up to the US Departures Area (2nd Level)

The world - the jet flys around it all day!

One of the models at the three domestic baggage claim belts. Two are of the bridges (one pictured) and the other is a model of the Old Town Clock.

Well that's all the pictures I took - enjoy.

Enjoy!

Thanks! This was an interesting tour. So many things to mention. The market looks exceptional. I am really glad you featured Hydrostone. This my first introduction to Hydrostone and eager to learn more about it. I will look at the link. That type of neighborhood interests me. Halifax appears to be an attractive city. The little squirrel was cute. Thanks again.

Halifax seemed like such a great little city when I visited in January '07. It would be nice to visit again at this time of year when the weather is better. Thanks for the great pics!

Great tour, halifaxboyns.

The Hydrostone is definatley a special neighbourhood. I really love the unique architecture, the history and the sense of time and place. It's one of my favourite places in the city.

I think Expat would be surprised at how Nova Scotia (New Scotland) is very similar in feel to coastal New England. The residential architecture is superb, in Halifax but everywhere else also. Check out Lunenburg and Mahone Bay in Google streetview when you can. Lunenburg was settled by german immigrants who became fisherman and boatbuilders by need rather than inclination. That is where the famous schooner The Bluenose was built. If there was another place I would live in Canada, it would be NS hands down, no contest.

The squirrel was a total fluke. I thought I saw a bird and I turned back and it was a tree branch but as I looked down there he was and I figured I'd snap a pic. As soon as I did - he was posing.

I miss Halifax dearly - Calgary is a great big city (where I live now); but there is something about Halifax that just makes it wonderful.

The Hydrostone is probably one of the most sought after neighbourhoods in Halifax now a days, which explains the rash of multi-residential going up around it. I'd like to see more, but not quite in the heart of it - just off to the side I guess.

Now if only the economy would grow and they'd get something like a streetcar that could go to the market and through downtown to the Hydrostone - that would really be cool!

Nova Scotia is one of the most beautiful places Ive ever been but unfortunately, I was never able to really visit Halifax since I went there on a family vacation and my family is very anti urban anything so that sucks. But Halifax looks pretty awesome.

Thanks everyone for your comments. This is an incomplete tour since I didn't get to see everything I wanted while I was home. I'm travelling home again in September for my birthday, so I hope to do a more complete photo tour and get out to some of the really out lying areas like Shelburne, Peggy's Cove and even Lunnenburg.

That was quite a comprehensive tour for me. I'm not sure I've seen that much of Halifax. Looks like a great city. I especially liked the skyline shot from Dartmouth. Thanks!

It is an amazing building. What I am always impressed with is the continued expansion of the airport. It's a very nice building compared to years ago. They've added way more windows which is great!
