Clearfield, PA

Clearfield (pop. 6,215) is the seat of Clearfield County (pop. 81,642) and has an urban cluster population of 14,783. Located 40 miles northwest of State College along I-80, Clearfield is bisected by the West Branch Susquehanna River.

Laid out in 1805 and incorporated as a borough in 1840, Clearfield is at the heart of a rich lumber and coal region. The fire clay deposits in the region would spur Clearfield's primary industry, fire bricks. These bricks could withstand great temperatures and were used to line the insides of furnaces, kilns and coke ovens.

Dimeling Hotel was built in 1905 and at 7 stories dominates the Clearfield skyline. It had 120 hotel rooms and now functions as an apartment building.

Clearfield County Courthouse was built in 1860.

Built in 1830, this is the oldest house in Clearfield.

Sweet! Another one of those pretty Pennsylvania towns that's surprisingly big for as small as it is.

Nice pictures. I did a Clearfield photothread a few years ago but you covered the housing stock much better than I did. I thought it had a lot of bland stuff, but apparently there's a lot of great houses.

Thank you very much for the pictures!

Nice town. I like these kind of places to live in: Nice houses, pretty landscape...

I like the tranquility of these towns in Pennsylvania.

Congratulations and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Thanks for sharing, what a great little town.

I live in Clearfield, UT, so it's nice to see some pictures of the other Clearfield that always pops up as an autofill option when I'm entering my address on websites.

Beautiful shots and city. Without SSP I would never have known how beautiful and urban PA small towns are.

guitarnia? more like guitarded.

now evergrey, how you gonna do a clearfield thread and not pay respects to your uncle denny (cousin denny?) and his beer barrel pub? let alone grice gun shop. in spite of these shocking omissions, excellent tour as usual. the dimeling building is a central PA classic.

I've been to Clearfield a number of times, but I never realized Clearfield had so many great buildings and homes. Nice tour! I'd buy a house there -- not sure what I'd do there though.

I believe Guitarnia has the cello from Electric Light Orchestra for sale in their window.

I'm surprised you remembered that detail about Denny being my uncle (and his son Denny Jr. being my cousin). To be honest... the building doesn't scream "photograph me!"... and I didn't have time to go inside and eat and photograph a big hamburger.

As for Pennsylvania's Largest Gun Shop... not sure how I missed it. It defines West-Central Pennsylvania cultural identity.
