The Coolest Hood in North America: Plateau, Montreal

Alright, so this is my favorite neighborhood. Then again, I was born and raised here so I may be biased. What I like about the Plateau is it's architectural variety; eclectic is an understatement here. It's also the 2nd most densely populated neighborhood in North America, and the most ''artistic'' (most artists per capita) neighborhood in Canada.

I took these pictures one afternoon last week. Hope you like them!

This is a cool hood. I want some more. And get some people and maybe some food too. Bet they have some killer grub around these parts.

Are the photos not appearing for anyone else? I was looking forward to seeing them.

Colorful perhaps. Looks really interesting though.

Super cool!!!

Although I must say, I have a VERY hard time believing THAT is the 2nd most densely-populated neighborhood in N. America! It's dense -- no doubt -- but there are so many neighborhoods in NYC, SF, Chicago, Philly, Boston and more that come to mind that may be far more dense. Do you have any stats to back this up? Just curious.

To be fair though, This thread only shows a tiny portion of the hood. Most of the streets are packed with 3-4 storey apts and triplexes. 2nd most populated? probably not, I'll agree there.

I toured this neighbourhood last year and I can say that it is as dense as any lowrise neighbourhoods out there. The density is not really shown here though.

Why make crazy claims when we have facts!!

Plateau density in 2006:
12,475.8/km2 (32,312.2/sq mi)
The stat is for the Plateau-Mont Royal borough and not the smaller part more commonly referred to as the Plateau, but the density is pretty uniform.

Manhattan (2010: 70,951/sq mi (27,394.3/km2)) is way denser than the Plateau and the last time I checked it was comprised of several neighbourhoods. So unless one of those neighbourhoods has a serious monopoly on all those people your assertion is false.

In any case, it's a kickass neighbourhood. The best part isn't just the density, but how the buildings interact with the streetscape. The people watching from my balcony is incredible. I feel very privileged to live here

Flar makes a good point though, there are almost no highrises in the borough.

It is a kickass neighborhood and great pics, but.....

San Francisco - Chinatown - 75,055/sq mi
Los Angeles - Westlake/MacArthur Park - 38,212/sq mi
Chicago - Edgewater - 36,363/sq mi

All three have other neighborhoods denser also, not to mention dozens in the other boroughs of NYC. I'm pretty sure there's more, but I'm too lazy to research it right now.

Yea I assumed there'd be more. Westlake is a good comparison because the neighbourhoods are close in size (7 and 8 km2).

West End Vancouver is way denser too (although it's only a quarter the size at 2 km2):

21,833.3/km2 (56,548/sq mi)

Even if you combine it with downtown vancouver, 11,576.5/km2 (29,983/sq mi), the density is still higher: 15,168/km2. This is all 2006 so Vancouver's downtown peninsula is probably even relatively denser now.

All that said I've lived in both Vancouver and Montreal and the street life and energy in the plateau definitely takes the cake. Vancouver's awesome too and getting better every year, but condo towers simply cannot replicate the triplex vibe.

Hey all, thanks for the positive comments. I have a second wave of photos coming. Sorry, no pics of people or highrises; I really wanted to limit myself to straightaway building facades (for this particular set) .

As for the density claim that has gotten so much attention, here's what I've found...

The Plateau or Plateau Mont-Royal is a part of the city of Montreal, just north of downtown and east of Mount Royal. Part of the borough of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, the Plateau is the most densely populated neighbourhood in Canada, with nearly 100,000 people living in a 7.75 square kilometre area.

WIKIPEDIA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Montreal

7.75 km = 4.8 miles

The Borough of Plateau Mont Royal

Montréal’s “hot” urban neighbourhood, Plateau Mont Royal is the most densely populated neighbourhood in North America. It is noted for its commercial and cultural vibrancy, its rich architectural heritage and the involvement of its residents in democratic life. Citizens of the Plateau are, among other things, the least vehicle dependant in the city.

(Source: Transport Canada http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/programs/env...tmycar-959.htm)

I can't find the source that said it was 2nd most dense after x neighborhood in San Fran but I'll keep looking
As a resident of this neighborhood all I can say is the density is most obvious from the streets; the human traffic here is INTENSE.
If the stats posted above are correct than Plateau obviously isn't in the top 5; I'm thinking tourism promoters may have tinkered with numbers (municipality/borough/voting district?) in order to make the neighborhood sound more exciting?

Pics coming soon
PS I made the photos larger

Loved the photos. Im originally from Montreal but moved to Vancouver's Yaletown neighbour hood 2 years ago. I miss Montreal terribly and planning to move back in spring. The Plateau is where I am headed. Just tough finding a place there because its so in demand. Please keep the photos coming

First, I love the photos! I like to think of Plateau as Montréal's Brooklyn.

Second, someone should inform Transport Canada that Mexico City is also in North America, and I'm afraid (relieved) not even Brooklyn has a neighborhood that can match some of the most packed hoods there;
