Whats with the bulkyness at the top? It should be the other way round, this building is just going to look fugly and strech the (really good looking) London City skyline too far along the ground..

I believe the thinking is that the top floors pay higher rents, so get as much floorspace as possible higher up. But it is the exact opposite philosophy to the Shard and towers with setbacks, which try to let as much light into the surrounding streets as possible.

I'm just thankful they knocked the old tower down. I'm now kind of curious to see this built, just to see who turns out to be right...

They've started work on this now - a couple of pics from a week or so apart:

And a picture of the site from the south - gives an idea of how small the site is.

All of the crap across the street from here should come down, as should the junky post-war midrise east of here on Fenchurch (not shown in the photo) that houses Mappin and Webb.

There is a lot of second-rate/tired stuff on Fenchurch Street - sadly some of it only just built!

It's one of the reasons why I'm sanguine about this tower going up, despite its strange shape. I'm confident the build quality, at least, will be high.

I agree. Plantation Place stinks, as does the newish building with Marks & Spenser.

update: lots of activity going on

Poor quality pictures from a quick London trip - but here you go.

Should this one not be moved to "under construction"?

Thanks for the update. It certainly should be moved to construction.

Do I see that right? Are those the bases for 3 more cranes inside the core? If so, that would make a total of 5 cranes (or, assuming one of them will be a rising concrete pump, 4 cranes). If so, this thing should shoot up pretty quickly.

^^Looks like they're just bases for a portable concrete pump.
