The highway noise drowns them out.
There is a wide paved path on the lake side that is very well used, and the drone of the QEW isn't as bad there especially if there's an onshore breeze and the wave sounds dominate, but the din of traffic really carries.
That beach strip neighbourhood has seen lots of change, especially in the last 10 years. Townhouse developments have gone up on large properties where older buildings once stood (including the site of a venerable but popular tavern that was demolished... without a permit), modern homes have been built on other lots, some former cottage-type dwellings expanded... it's quite a mix now.
But still, given the noise, the industrial aromas and particulates (would have been far worse in the 1970s and 80s but still persist today), the power lines, and lack of privacy along the beach side during the daytime, I think one would
REALLY have to want to live there to be happy. The advantage it had of being relatively cheap compared to other parts of the city has been drying up too, I believe.
