That’s so bad it’s good.

Honestly if other buildings of the same scale surround it, it might actually look “whimsical” in 30 years time if the occupants are allowed to do things like grow plants and decorate balconies and hang different colour curtains and things like that.

It looks like it's missing a Casino in it's base, and it should be located near an airport.

Removing the unnecessary lighthouse on the house would make a world of difference.

Brand new on Halifax's Gottingen Street... Believe it or not this is not supportive housing, but advertised as "High Quality, Minimal Living"

It's not the best demonstration of modern architecture but I find it fine still! What bothers me more is the actual state of the basements around the buildings that make the whole scenery uglier than it should be. I think the ministration of such buildings should focus more on the surrounding tightness in order to look more appealing for buyers. There are many ways to to clean the pavement effectively. In my area in the US they regularly call cspressurewashingservices.com since they are really qualified and they make the place look like brand new. I know a lot of apartment owners that call it once in a while themselves.

I don't mind the design itself, but the colours are what's throwing it off for me.

I like what's next to it on the left.

Hamilton Beaches has been mentioned before for the many hydro towers lining the beach, the Burlington Skyway running adjacent, and the refineries across on the other side of the water.

If you ever drive through, you get a very eclectic mix of houses. There's some dilapidated houses and there's some gorgeous new builds. Very few fake looking mcmansions built and I do believe there are bylaws preventing the building of monstrosities. And no two houses are alike.

There's some low key beach town vibes going on here when you go down the little side streets heading to the beach, like Atlantic City, or closer to home, Wasaga, but mostly it's a very mediocre neighbourhood with low walkability.

Posting here due to the ugliness behind it, but there's still a lot of charm, character and beauty as well. And some of these "ugly" houses really ain't ugly given the wacky mix of houses here, while others are just sitting there waiting to be cashed in on so the owner gets the last laugh.

How noisy is the neighbourhood? If road sounds don't carry over to the houses, I have to imagine the power lines give off a good hum too.

Many times when I've driven over the Burlington Skyway I've found that there can be quite a smell from Hamilton industrial areas drifting over this area.

The highway noise drowns them out.

There is a wide paved path on the lake side that is very well used, and the drone of the QEW isn't as bad there especially if there's an onshore breeze and the wave sounds dominate, but the din of traffic really carries.

That beach strip neighbourhood has seen lots of change, especially in the last 10 years. Townhouse developments have gone up on large properties where older buildings once stood (including the site of a venerable but popular tavern that was demolished... without a permit), modern homes have been built on other lots, some former cottage-type dwellings expanded... it's quite a mix now.

But still, given the noise, the industrial aromas and particulates (would have been far worse in the 1970s and 80s but still persist today), the power lines, and lack of privacy along the beach side during the daytime, I think one would REALLY have to want to live there to be happy. The advantage it had of being relatively cheap compared to other parts of the city has been drying up too, I believe.

How in the fuck did they get a permit to construct such a shitty, shoddy appendage?

They probably didn't.

Apparently that's what happens when a dog meets breakfast.

Here's the street view. Interesting angles! And it's *420* Beach Blvd., so perhaps that had something to do with it.

Hamilton Beaches looks kind of perfect, hydro pylons and all, as a place to give up on everything.

I don't think it is quite finished yet. There are wires dangling out of the top.

It is a matter of taste and I don't like the corrugated metal cladding much but I think this building, really the whole row, has a certain charm. The ground floor might be in the top 1% of ground floors for Canadian developments (i.e. human scale, intelligible, and more than 0 creativity applied; look at the metalwork to the left).

It strange how Hamilton is so different to Toronto being so close. The styles of homes very similar to what you see in Buffalo.

Hamilton is a mix. Cheaper clapboard housing closer to the industrial areas but brick construction homes like Toronto closer to the escarpment. There are some Hamilton neighbourhoods that are indistinguishable from toronto neighbourhoods.. some not so much.

Clapboard housing exists across southern Ontario really - it was cheaper to construct so tends to be smaller and cheaply constructed, usually working class housing. It’s not like Buffalo where large established homes use the cladding. Larger houses still use brick.

I bike along the beach strip regularly - the trail is actually quite nice. The housing mix is really interesting and unique - it actually makes for a fun neighbourhood to explore because of it. The highway noise is definitely problematic though. It’s becoming quite the popular neighbourhood despite that though, lots of new construction houses going up in the area as of late on the empty lots and on the lots that had the smallest old cottages.

There used to be a smaller version of the neighbourhood on the Burlington side of the canal, but Halton Region has been buying up all the houses over the last decade with the idea of transforming the space into a large beachfront park. They are even discussing relocating the hydro towers as part of the work.
