It is official. It's up on Crystal Palace's Facebook page:

Bass Pro Shops to move into Crystal Palace Complex

Cadillac Fairview has made the difficult decision to close a portion of the Crystal Palace complex, which includes the Crystal Palace Amusement Park, Ramada Plaza Crystal Palace Hotel and Convention Centre and McGinnis Landing Restaurant, to allow for a new development opportunity. This opportunity is the welcoming of Bass Pro Shops, an outdoor retail leader in camping, nature gifts, outdoor cooking and much more.

Although we look forward to having Bass Pro Shops open, we are deeply saddened by the closure of this portion of the Crystal Palace Complex. This complex has been an iconic fixture in our community for 24 years and has been a great tourist attraction. We are pleased to share that we are working with Magic Mountain to ensure the rides remain part of the community for years to come.

Effective end of day September 1st, 2014, the Crystal Palace Amusement Park will close. The Ramada Plaza Crystal Palace Hotel and Convention Centre and McGinnis Landing Restaurant will close on October 31, 2014.

To learn more, visit. crystalpalace.ca
Crystal Palace's website hasn't been updated yet.

Sounds like Magic Mountain is looking to grab the rides. A shame they're closing up so close to the quarter century anniversary; maybe Magic Mountain could build a 'new' Crystal Palace with the Rides to continue the tradition at a new location.

Unfortunate, but not horribly surprising. The thing about amusement parks is they have to change fairly frequently to stay interesting to people, and I think after the first few times you went there, you'd seen all there was to see.

As a building for BP, it is fantastic, however... the high, vaulted ceilings are perfect for an outdoors shop... the dioramas that feature in Cabela's stores in the US come to mind.

Definitely a bittersweet event. I'd love to see Magic Mountain expand and turn into either a bigger water park, or a combination water/amusement park with actual coasters and things.

It's just that Crystal Palace was something unique, now we get another retailer instead. That said, hopefully MM will build an indoor complex of similar size for the rides, maybe add some indoor water slides??

Also, if they are also taking up the Ramada, the convention centre and McGinnis Landing, that may free up space in the market for a new hotel somewhere downtown....although most likely it would be included in a MM redevelopment, in the outskirts again..

Still, I think I would have prefered to have CP renovated and Bass Pro Shops set up somewhere in the outskirts instead.

But is the Crysatal Palace that bad of a money loosing business that Cadilac Fairview is looking at shutting it down? Or is Cadilac Fairview looking to get out of the amusement park business.

I've never seen CP as a big money maker, but I'm not a businessman.
Looks like a win-win to me.
Magic Mt. gets the rides.
The rest of us get a BPS.

Probably looking to get out of the amusement park business. It's a high maintenance business and doesn't really fit in with their Shopping portfolio.

Ciniplex barely fits into it either, but theatres with their set show times that encourage people to show up early and / or stay later fit in better than an amusement park where people can show up, ride the rides and leave as soon as they are done.

Pie in the Sky dreaming time: Magic mountain buys the rides, and starts building both an indoor AND outdoor amusement park to fit with their water park; effectively starting to build up to becoming something like "Canada's Wonderland East". Ramada or someone else builds on site as well, using that as a destination resort basically; which would fit with the Casino being close by as well.

As I said above, I'd love to see a proper Right-Coast amusement park.

Well, if Magic Mountain is willing to take the risk, this might be their time to shine.

I'm glad to see that they're getting the rides. I agree with everyone else that they should build an indoor facility, hopefully with some indoor waterslides and become a year round amusement park.

If this were to happen, this would be very good for the hotel cluster out at Magnetic Hill.

Sad. I understand the business aspect of it but still disappointing. Trading off a hotel/Amusement Park/restaurant for a BPS/strip Mall is indeed bittersweet.

On the tourist front, this is a loss for New-Brunswick. Personally, I would have driven to Moncton to bring my kids once they are old enough although don't count on me to drive up there for a Brass Pro Shop.

Although I agree with you, this being New-Brunswick, there is still quite a large demographic that would be more likely to make the trip for the complex's new incarnation.

Everything but the Chapters and the cinema complex will be renovated and/or reconstructed. BPS stores are huge - I mean Costco sized. The Moncton BPS is supposed to be 110,000 sq ft.

I know what you are saying and you are spot on, it fits the demographic pretty well. I suspect it is one of the reason why Moncton is getting it as opposed to Halifax.

The cinema complex is brand new and state of the art, including one Ultra-AVX auditorium (one step below IMAX). The cinemas are definitely staying.
