not only that, but the mini-towers were built by the same company that I worked for!

There's no Nanaimo construction thread (and not that there should be one!) so I'm posting this here.

This is Insight Development's proposed Seawalk, designed by Raffi Architects. This one is completely market dependent.

Great looking building. I wonder if Nanaimo has the market for this now. I guess the developer could possibly get it 50 percent presold over a period of time. I understand that price points for high rise condos are cheaper than Victoria, but the development costs are the same so I also always wonder about viability up there too. That all said I hope it gets built. Looks cool.

Those are the types of buildings they need to be building in Victoria's Harris Green neighbor hood. Frustrating.

I was just about to ask what the height on this is, after seeing it in the Canada section! 114 meters! Wowie! That'll be the tallest building in any metro under 400 000 in the entire country!

well this will help fill the seats of the Chinese airlines flying into YVR, when (if?) complete. Need to confirm if it has actually started:

China-backed Nanaimo hotel plans for 70,000 guests a year

BIV Wed Aug 27, 2014

Quote:
The China-based backers of a new Nanaimo hotel say that the 240-room tower will draw 70,000 Chinese tourists a year – equal to about 90% of the population of the Vancouver Island city....

...SSS Manhao International Tourism Group, a subsidiary of Suzhou Youth Travel Services Co. Ltd., a major Chinese tourism and travel company, broke ground on the hotel project in mid-August....

...The $50 million, 21-storey luxury development will have a restaurant on the top floor overlooking Nanaimo Harbour, according to the developer. The new hotel is located directly next to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. An overhead pedestrian walkway will connect it to the conference centre...

...Suzhou Youth Travel Services will fill its hotel with guests who otherwise would not visit Nanaimo, said Nanaimo Economic Development Corp. CEO Sasha Angus.

Suzhou puts approximately 14.6 million customers each year on planes across the world, Angus said, adding the hotel “will provide a significant stimulus for the local economy.”

In 2013 BC saw 204,000 direct customs entries from China (out of a total of 350,000 to Canada). The Chinese were just less than 5% of all international visitors to BC in 2013, so lots of room for more growth.

Nice, so this tower really is going ahead? It will really help Nanaimo's already decent (and underrated) downtown core. With this tower, and hopefully the other hotel proposal going forward, it will have a great skyline for a 100 000 person city.

they say it has started... I'll be going up there next week, maybe I'll take the drive thorough instead of the parkway and check it out. I like that it is next to the convention centre.

here is a video of the ribbon cutting ceremony in early August, it has some more details about the project as well.

and a 'render' from the video:

I went by on sunday but just went and checked out Cabela's new store instead of going downtown. I'll have to go again soon to see what's happening with this lot and the lot next to Maffeo Sutton park.

I went today and there's nothing happening at either lot. The one I don't understand is the empty lot next to Maffeo-Sutton park, it might be the best lot in Nanaimo (right downtown and on the water) yet it's deadsvillle. Mind you it took over 20 years to build Pacifica.

That's too bad, it would be nice to see something happening

I've been to Nanaimo a couple times recently and took these shots. This is the prime downtown lot that remains undeveloped with the new development at the top right:

Here is the new development from different angles, even though it's only 6 stories, due to it's hilltop location downtown it will be conspicuous:

Thanks for the pics, nice to see some shots of Nanaimo.

Guessing no movement on the Chinese hotel tower so far?

Another dead proposal that jumped through all the hoops just to go no where I am guessing.

I never ever trust a tower project anymore for Kelowna or Nanaimo until it is completed (not even u/c given Lucia and SOPA, haha).
