You asked, you got it!! Favela in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil!

This is the favela Grande Cruzeiro do Sul, largest in Porto Alegre, next to Santa Teresa hill and the Claro Tower, in the south area of the city.

The pics were taken in 2004, by PortoImagem (SSC forumer) when he visited the Claro Tower. The quality is bad cuz they were taken with a conventional film machine and then scanned.

Before the pics, 4 GoogleEarth pics for better localization.

Well, that was it!

But there is a bonus for the curious about poverty and violence in Brazil. Some strong pictures of bank robbers killed by police in Porto Alegre.

They had robbed a Itaú bank in Protásio Alves avenue and shot to ladies. The cops pursued them to Vila Bom Jesus (poor shanty) where fire was exchanged. 3 robbers were killed and 3 were wounded and arrested.

The robbers were using bullet proof vests. One of the robbers killed was a 19 yr old soldier (mandatory service in Brazil for every 18 yr old male, but 90% are released from duty because there are too many people) son of a cop.

Militar Cops (Civil Police in Brazil only does investigation, its ridiculous, maybe I will explain later) show the weapons aprehended from the bandits

Car from the cops turned into swiss cheese by the bandits!

Car used by bandits got over 30 shots

lol, some of those photos were interesting. However, (and not to sound picky, but just to clarify) this isn't at all what anyone "asked" to see. Noone said "I want to see flavellas and crime because that is the real brazil". All that was said was 'let's see something more than a Maserati and a gated community straight outta Scottsdale, AZ'.

You're right; you didn't ask specifically for favellas and crime, but in the other thread you did ask to see a more balanced vision of Brazil.. Now that you've seen Trantor's pictures of upper and middle class areas, Mary's photos of super wealthy areas, and now these favela pics, the forum is a bit more balanced with respect to Brazil. I like Mary's pictures, but you're right.. she does go out of her way to photograph the super nice stuff. Thanks Trantor!

Oh, it's not very bad! But, I don 't prefer it here. And in Curitiba, it's similar the favela. And I see in a one site that PA has more favelas than Curitiba, but I don't know it, I'm searching the link, and when I find I put here, ok?

Interesting shot's, I see there are much crime/"bad areas" in Brazil too!
thanks for posting this, now we can see what "real Brazil" is, but ofcourse nothing is "real Brazil" as every shot of Brazilian cities are real enought.

Norway is a very rich country, but that doesn't mean that we don't have poor areas. The poor areas are the same country, but if we just post poor pictures, we may get the wrong image of Norway. therefore balanced picture threads are a good idea. although I see you posted this because there is another thread that represent the "richer" part of Brazil.

I was the guy requesting a some favela "shots", and I got a bit more than I bargained for. Still, it's very interesting. I would say it looks better than Mexico City's slums.

this is the largest favela in one of the best brazilian cities. There are much worse (and MUCH BIGGER) favelas in Rio and São Paulo.

Interesting. I've seen lots of pics of favelas in Rio and Sao Paulo but not in any Brazilian southern cities.

These don't look all that bad (aside from the violence). It reminds me of the aerials of Cuidad Juarez, Mexico I got for my El Paso sprawl thread.

This one looks like it used to be a slum but they've been fixing them up:

Not so fixed up.

Just for comparison, let's compare these with some American slums.

The "rule" seems to be, in America, slums tend to be houses that used to be nice (or at least average) housing that gradually went "downmarket" and became run-down. In Latin America, it looks like slums tend to be houses that squatters originally built themselves with scrap materials, but over time they gradually fix them up.

El Paso

Kansas City

Tucson

Los Angeles - not really slums, but still "downmarket" stuff

Elsewhere in metro LA

Phoenix

Buffalo. Not sure if these would be "slums" or not, but it is "downmarket" stuff at least

San Antonio

St Louis. Also typical of many areas in Detroit and some other Midwestern and Northeastern cities

Memphis

Miami

Birmingham

Paterson, New Jersey

I don't have any other of those bombed-out looking slums you find in a lot of Northeastern and Midwestern old cities, except for that one in St Louis.

Some more American slums, for comparison.

These don't include any public housing projects.

South Bronx

Brooklyn (Bedford-Stuyvesant)

Cleveland

Detroit. Detroit doesn't really seem to have many "slums," it's just . . . abandoned.

Newark

Another St Louis

Interesting diversion into slums: whose are worse?

Just this observation. Latin American favelas may be bad and frightening, but at least there's something - dare I say it? - like vibrancy. When you look at American slums, particularly in the Rust Belt, the Sun Belt, or the South, the sense of abandonment is pretty stark. Eastern cities in America seem to have kept the urban fabric (the shot of Buffalo hardly looks like a slum from the air, and Bedford Stuyvesant is gentification waiting to happen).

This is like the place I ended up in when a Navy buddy and I met a couple of sweet young gals (I guess you could call them Independant Contractors) in Recife back in '73. Sure looks similar, but then again I was under the influence of that evil spirit Rum.

Thanks for the pics Trantor.

I'd say Bed-Sty is well on its way to being gentrified...

To be honest, I read those "lets see the 'real' Brazil" comments in another thread and was slightly annoyed. So don't be discouraged from showing the non-favela Brazil in future threads. I find it facinating to see, since I've never been.
