They should turn this into a regular thing at the square, either weekly or monthly. It really brought people out despite the colder weather.

^We need a proper Christmas market ie. with heated vendor booths. I hope this happens.

I've ben harping about this for a few years now. The German Christmas market in Vancouver does gangbuster business, and is very popular. I fail to see why that model can't fly in Edmonton.

Weather... if it is -20, people are not coming out. Hard to have predictably decent weather.

With that attitude, we may as well not have any winter festivals. If need be, there can always be heaters to keep things warm.

I meant ^in jest...^in part. Of course we can deal with weather, BUT, we need to ensure what we do can work ^in -5 or -20... Ie wind shields, heating, etc.

Edmonton puts too much effort on festivals--We should be vibrant everyday.

Metro Edmonton - Omar Mouallem

"Variations of this message recurred throughout the festival: Vibrant cities, like most of us want, like those to which we vacation, aren’t built around special occasions. "

While in Vancouver, it rains for much of the full term of the event. People still come out, fewer in number, but that hasn't stopped the event from being a big success overall.

This is one of the more frustrating aspects of Edmonton, I think. Our vibrancy is always a temporary facade of tents that goes to sleep after the buskers go home at night. It has gotten better through the everyday activities on at Churchill and Whyte is routinely busy on weekends when it isn't -30 out, but there is still much improvement to be had.

http://www.silverskatefestival.org

The Silver Skate Festival is a 10-day, family-oriented festival running February 13-22, 2015 in Edmonton's scenic river valley. Rooted in Dutch winter traditions, the festival combines sport (especially skating), arts and culture, and recreation. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, the Silver Skate Festival is the longest running winter festival in Edmonton. Over the years, it has grown in leaps and bounds, from a small skating event to a large-scale, winter extravaganza. Last year, more than 70,000 visitors came out to play.

Each year, the festival transforms Hawrelak Park into a winter wonderland with fun for the entire family. Here, you'll discover breathtaking snow sculpture, winter sports, and horse-drawn sleighs carrying families through the park. Sit in a Cree Winter Camp and cook bannock over an open fire. Compete in the Winter triathlon or speed skating events.Meet a team of sled dogs. Take in live music and theatrical performances with your friends and loved ones. Our festival activities are as diverse as the people who call our Northern community home.

Extreme ice track takes shape in Edmonton river valley

By Elise Stolte, Edmonton Journal February 23, 2015

Photograph by: Elise Stolte, Edmonton Journal

EDMONTON - Final details about the Red Bull Crashed Ice track released Monday describe a 415-metre downhill course that curves up and over the conference centre before turning sharply and dropping all the way down to the river.

Edmonton’s track, the final stop on the tour, will be the longest of them all.

Through gaps in the fencing, pedestrians can already see the scaffolding and puck board outline the drops, hills, jumps and quick turns that athletes will race through. The track has a total drop of 95 metres. Four athletes at a time will race to the finish line.

The race runs March 12 to 14 and will be free for spectators...

I'M COMING TO THE EVENT, WHERE SHOULD I STAND?
From Louise McKinney Park and the surrounding area, you'll have a great view of the finish line. You can also catch the action from below the Shaw Conference Centre on Grierson Hill Rd and in the surrounding green space. From Jasper Avenue, you'll have a view of the starting gate. Although none of the viewing areas capture the entire track, there will be large screens projecting the races live from every angle on Jasper Avenue, in Sir Winston Churchill Square and at various points of the track itself. Space is limited and spectator zones are first-come, first-served. Each portion of the track provides its own excitement, so choose wisely!

WHAT'S THE SCHEDULE? WHEN SHOULD I HEAD OUT TO THE EVENT?
There are 2 main nights of action to come out for. The Team Competition takes place on Friday, March 13, from 7pm-9pm, and the World Championship final goes down on Saturday, March 14, from 7pm-10pm. On both Friday and Saturday, make sure to arrive early because viewing areas are first-come, first-served.
