That's a travesty compared to what could have been. Observatory tower.

LA fitness + Motel One is such an interesting combo for that location. Isn’t there an LA fitness a few blocks away? And since when does Motel One do large urban hotels?

Very simple: land value increases exponentially as supply is depleted. It's not feasible to build a 800'+ tower in the middle of 60 acres of vacant land. But building one on the last parcel surrounded by a forest of 10-20 floor towers starts to look pretty attractive.

It’s a pretty low end combo for the Loop.

But here we are heading into a huge recession. It would be better for development to pause completely for a couple of years, than to have remaining parcels of land developed in a subpar way and then be stuck with low quality building stock (like almost everything the Brits built in the 1950s, 60s and 70s).

Let's stop all development for a couple of years is certainly a take. There wouldn't be a construction industry left when you were ready to build again.

Motel One is a German chain that does nothing BUT large urban (budget-priced) hotels, usually transit-oriented. Here's the one at the Vienna train station.

Maybe you're thinking of Super 8 or Motel 6?

It makes sense they're looking to open on top of Chicago's busiest L stop...

Both. Things will not just bounce back quickly.
