You have to upload whatever it is to the internet first before you can post it. Was that from Facebook?

Jesus Murphy this is amazing. You're a real master builder Lurker!

What's that cable running out of the building in the 5th picture? Does this light up?

Thank you! It does light up. I will take a few shots and post them when it gets dark.

The LEGO Architect

The LEGO Architect by Tom Alphin was published on September 24, 2015.

Some of you here will not be surprised since some of your works are featured in the book. Two pictures of my mini-fig scale Guardian Building are in the book but Spencer and Rocco not only have multiple buildings but "Builder Profiles" in this book as well. Microscale is very prominent.

This is a nice book that has chapters for each style of architecture; it includes both real world and LEGO examples of these styles. I would recommend it for beginning and intermediate LEGO builders (I do not think experts like Spencer for example will learn anything new!). I like this book better than LEGO Architecture, A Visual Guide since the latter just shows you the official LEGO sets in the Architecture series.

Landscape | landmark

For those of you in the Indiana, Texas, or London area...

Come see all 27 of my Chicago models at Brickworld in Fort Wayne this October!

I will also be exhibiting my entire display of more than 40 models at BrickUniverse Dallas this November and BRICK 2015 London this December! I will be debuting an all-new Dallas model and two all-new London models at their respective shows!

Hint: each of these landmarks are depicted in the skyline silhouettes of this flier. Guess away!

I was wondering how you guys make your bases to build your buildings on. I've been using just the big 48x48 stud base plates, but I've been thinking of doing something different with my model of downtown. How exactly are you guys designing your bases? Do you have any photos showing the underside of them? Any instructions? I hate the idea of using a ton of flat plates to build my bases with since it would take too many.

I use the base plates like the ones you described and a layer of tiles for the sidewalks

Kevin, I would say there are definitely some good ways to go about making bases that can be cost effective. In my modeling experience, I have found that a five-plate-and-one-tile thickness provides the most rigidity, as well as enough substance to the context so that the building and plaza compliment each other quite nicely. I typically try and do a layer of plates, followed by bricks, then another layer of plates which are capped by tiles. Larger plates are necessary, I feel, to cover enough studs in order to interlock the bricks. The bricks, one the other hand, provided the stiffness and rigidity that will stabilize the base. If you simply stacked five layers of plates topped by tiles, you'll find that the base will warp upward and the model could end up bobbling a bit. The good thing about the middle layer of bricks is that you can use all your undesirable colors on the inside behind the uniform elements of the plaza's composition. If you find yourself making thicker bases due to elevational variations, the thickness and thinness of one area versus another can be quite compelling from an urban understanding standpoint. I wouldn't suggest making a thick base if there's no need for it, though. Balance can make or break a composition, which is, after all, what any artistic medium is about.
