I think it makes some really interesting points. I don't really know how much control council would really have over the inner workings of a private corporation but I would love to see something done about this.
I think its a good article, and it is a case where I don't agree with the corporation. I think that if they want to pay to keep a space vacant, they have the right to (you can't open the door to forcing people to use anything that is privately-held, especially at a loss). But you should have to pay. After a certain period of time, vacant buildings should be subject to higher taxes. That way if its REALLY worth it to keep it vacant, you can. You have the option to make that business decision. However, it should NOT be an easy decision.
I was going to post the Doc article here but it has already been done. I wish the writer had given a bit more of an in depth analysis of his speech though, not a whole lot there really.
Mayor encourages business development in St. John's
St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe used his annual address to the Rotary Club on Thursday to encourage people with ideas, and money, to do more business with the city.
He presented statistics showcasing the overall increase, from personal incomes to housing starts. The only number showing a decline is the unemployment rate.
O'Keefe attributes some of the city's recent progress to partnerships not just with other governments, but also with private companies.
He suggested that more of the same kind of partnerships would be in everyone's interests.
"If we can do a project and pay only half the cost, then the benefit is to us, and it's a damned good investment," O'Keefe said.
"So if you have a million dollars and you have a good idea, come to city hall and we'll work with you."
Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff said she is more selective about who she would choose to do business partnerships with.
"I do recognize the value of partnership, but I think the partnerships have to be aimed at direct benefits to the city," Duff said.
O'Keefe doesn't share the idea of selective partnerships.
"We, the city, will partner with anybody except the devil ... to help grow this city."
I just saw on CBC that Ron Ellsworth will definitely run in this election, I missed for what he will be running. Also they were talking as if it's for sure that O'Leary will be running for mayor.

Damn I am sad I wont be here to hear the political BS being thrown around this summer.
So if that's the case......So far we have Pro-Development Candidates for:
Mayor, Deputy Mayor & Ward 3, in all honesty I hope there are pro development candidates in every ward and for the at large positions, that way there will be a clear decision as to where the residents want the city to go for the next 4 year.
