Wait a few years when ESPN and TNT begin setting up cameras. Look forward to that.

I'm actually content that the Kings didn't get their arena when they were good. The arena would most likely had a decent design and located in Natomas. Come 2016, the city will have one of the most urban arenas in the NBA.

Does the soccer stadium idea justify its own thread?

Looks like they demo'd all the way to J street. Moving right along and nice to see that little office building go too.

I read that the rest of the mall is going to be demo'd probably next year. Hopefully Macy's will be included as well!

The Macy's store will not be part of the ongoing demolition, it is owned separately and not part of the arena project. The theater and food court are supposed to eventually be demolished, down the road, as part of the ancillary development, but isn't supposed to be part of this phase--although the uncertainty about when demo will take place has already spooked a couple of the tenants, like River City Brewing.

Actually from what I heard and read was that the owners of the mall did not renew River City Brewing's lease. No "spooking" involved. Also the owners have stated that the movie theater will stay but that area is gong to be extensively remodeled and reoriented towards the arena. But you are correct that Macys is independently owned and no major plans have been announced regarding their downtown store. I would like to see Macys do a major makeover seeing that it's going to be more visable once the arena is built. The problem might be that it's the only department store left in the central city. No competition breeds complacency.

Agreed. I'd like to see a new exterior skin and windows if Macy's ever decides to remodel. I wonder if the Kings and/or the mall's owner have discussed a makeover of the store.

I like the look of the current Macy's, it just needs a little cleaning up rather than a remodel. And I'd interpret the interviews with the owner of River City Brewing as "spooked"--they were told they would stay through at least 2015, now their lease isn't being renewed and they aren't feeling too good about renting month-to-month, thus making plans for relocation.

Quote:
Ayres-Biro said business at River City Brewing has been down 35 percent since the arena project began.

She said she felt a bit betrayed because city leaders have repeatedly asked her business to stick it out at the Downtown Plaza.

"The city has said more than once, numerous times that they want to keep this whole area locally owned," she said. "But yet we're just not seeing any support in that way."

"That's not the city's call on who they have as tenants," Parrington said.

Ayes-Biro said she has offered to put her business in mothballs and reopen when the remodel is complete.

However, she said JMA has not yet promised her a reserved location.

She said she and the other owners are planning to move.

Ok wburg but that's not what you first implied. But whatever. As for Macys that's a matter of opinion and taste, or lack of. I know a handful of people see it worthy of historical preservation. I'm not one of those. Actually, it's more than a matter of taste. The exterior of Macy's is downright hostile towards the pedestrian. A simply scrub down won't change that.

This. Not sure if the exterior technically fits into the 'brutalism' style, but it sure is offensive to anyone walking past it on the sidewalk.

100% agree on this. The west side is about as offensive as it gets... especially due to the propensity of some folks to use the wall and planters as a urinal. Gotta hold your breath walking through there on a warm day. Almost as bad as the alley behind St. Rose of Lima Park..

I wonder if Macy's will stay in that location for very long, without the mall.
