Panel Moves To Settle Centuries-Old Indiana-Michigan Border Debate

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A yearslong effort to establish an official boundary between Indiana and Michigan is getting underway.

The Indiana-Michigan Boundary Line Commission has agreed to seek quotes for survey work from Mile 0, which starts at Lake Michigan, to Mile 20, in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

The work is part of an effort to clear up the 105-mile border between the two states, which has been anyone’s guess for the better part of two centuries.
The only government-recognized line between the two states is based off wooden stakes driven into the ground by Eleazer Kendrick in 1827. But most of those stakes have disappeared over the years, blurring the exact location of the border that stretches from southern Lake Michigan to northwestern Ohio.

Volunteers have hiked through woods, marshes and grasslands and searched lakes and streams for the stakes, but they’ve only found a handful over the years.

I'm not ever sure what that's supposed to mean. lol Unfortunately, you can basically get everything you could get in Indiana, here, now, in Michigan's continued Mississippification since 2010.

Now, a new Michigan law allowing the sale and use of consumer-grade fireworks like firecrackers and bottle rockets is changing the game for fireworks retailers. Out-of-state sellers are planning to open stores in cities like Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, working to comply with state safety regulations before the selling season heats up.

"When the law wasn't passed we had literally the perfect location," said P&P manager Tom Tyson, who said the store is "expecting for the worst," with at least 30 to 50 percent drop in sales projected this summer. "The plan is to move up into Michigan and try to retain as many of the customers as possible ... everyone down here at the state line is trying to move up into Michigan – Kalamazoo (and) Battle Creek."

As for resurveying the border. Meh. The border seems to be much more economically important to Indiana than it does to Michigan.
