ER has, as usual, posted this very provocative and interesting old ad [above]. Notice the odd 'drippy' style of lettering above.
I looked around and lo and behold I have found more. I do wonder what was in those rather expensive pills for 1889 , Los Angeles Daily Herald.

The ad does mention Spermatorrhea which is a condition of excessive or accidental ejaculation. Never heard of that but it sounds most dreadful!

In Western medicine during the nineteenth century, spermatorrhea was regarded as a medical disorder with corrupting and devastating effects on the mind and body. The cure for spermatorrhea was regarded as enforced chastity and avoidance of masturbation, with circumcision sometimes being used as a treatment. [wiki] Oh please, pass the whiskey bottle! I do wonder if this was a common condition in vintage Los Angeles.

ER's ad mentions "Blur before the eyes"....I get that occasionally. Do I need these pills or new glasses?

"Enforced chastity" is casually mentioned...!!what!!, why that's an outrage.

In the ad below we see mentioned the "Nadean House". What kind of a house was that? Plus, we see that the good doctor keeps moving to different rooms....why?

Interesting postcards. In the first card, notice the area with the fewest number of people. Assume this to be the lifeguard's domain. Interesting two-story structure - that looks far more substantial than the typical life guard stand. Lifeguard Headquarters?

Was not aware that the lifeguards were a precursor to the Coast Guard. For more on the LA Lifeguard lineage >> http://www.fire.lacounty.gov/Lifegua...ryByDecade.asp

The primary feature of the second card (above) may be Normandy-inspired, but the smaller structure without the parapets, to the left, seems ahead of its time - i.e., bearing elements that appear strikingly "streamlined" and "modern."

All Communications Strictly Confidential.....I should hope so. Wonder what the chemical composition of these pills were? I suspect that Bromide could have figured in there.

CBD, the ad is referring to the Nadeau House (the u looks like an n in the ad). It was later known as the Hotel Nadeau.

Nadeau House, built in 1882/this view is around 1897.

After having your spermatorrhea cured across from the Nadeau House, you can walk over
to the Hollenbeck Hotel and have your tape worm removed in under two hours (complete with the head).
Then perhaps lunch!

ER: Thanks big time for the post about my blog--actually, there's a new post there today (wilshireboulevardhouses.blogspot.com)

As for the billboard on Wilshire--you may not have realized that I'd just written about the Samaritan Institute, which was in the old Marco Hellman house at 3350 Wilshire from 1935 to 1950. The story is here: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...e-see-our.html

The house in the photo was built in 1928 at the foot of 64th Street in Playa del Rey for $50,000 by actress Mae Murray (1885-1965), "the girl with the bee-stung lips."

themave.com -- http://www.themave.com/bijou/cvrs/cvr-maemurray.htm

Murray's best-remembered film today is MGM's The Merry Widow (1925), directed by Erich von Stroheim. Murray had earned as much as $7,500 a week and by 1925 had accumulated $3,000,000 in the bank.

In 1926 she made the mistake of marrying Prince David Mdiviani (1907-1984), formerly of Soviet Georgia. He kept the birth of their son secret for 16 months, out of his fear it might affect Murray's career. He also talked her into breaking her contract with MGM, which prompted Louis B. Mayer to have her blackballed in Hollywood. Although she had oil wells -- which she let her husband and brother-in-law manage -- on her beachfront property, she was broke by 1933 (the year she divorced Mdiviani) and had to sell her Playa del Rey home.

Subsequently she lost custody of her son, and in later years wandered the streets of Playa del Rey and sat on the beach in front of her former home. She may have been the basis for the Norma Desmond character in Sunset Boulevard. Murray famously commented on Desmond, "None of us floozies was that nuts."

She lived off the charity of friends. In 1964 she undertook a cross-country bus tour to revive her career. Found in St. Louis, she thought she was in New York; the Salvation Army helped get her back to Los Angeles. She died in the Motion Picture Country Home the next year.

I don't know why this vehicle failed to become a household name. I mean, it climbed the Grand Avenue hill - easily (um, I guess that was a big deal).

Hey, I took Mabel for a ride on my big Grabowsky last night.
Really? I didn't think she was that kind of girl.

Ted's Rancho Restaurant in Malibu. What can anybody tell me about this place?
I was watching the movie "Escape Artist" last night on netflix and became curious about the restaurant's name displayed on Raul Julia's lobster bib.
I looked it up and found this:

http://malibu.patch.com/groups/fireb...o-an4c10a16812

"Years and years ago on Pacific Coast Highway south of Malibu, in the shadow of Castellamare, where now there are only a few weeds at the asphalt’s edge, Ted’s Rancho Restaurant once stood.

The gruff, ass-pinching boss, Lucky Fields, was right out of bad film noir. He had beady eyes, slicked back gangster hair, and a pencil mustache, and exuded venality and corruptness — and grandiosity."

http://johnmendelssohn.blogspot.com/...8_archive.html

I'm not sure but I believe the place burned to the ground sometime in the '60s so I'm thinking the use of the name on the bib is somewhat of an inside joke. The movie was filmed in the early '80s and featured Desi Arnaz and Griffin O'Neal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNAZeRJQzgw

If you look at the video you'll notice that the reflection in the window showing the white arched building doesn't match the scene Raul Julia is supposedly viewing of a run down industrial neighborhood filmed in Cleveland.
