Nope-not there...just as I expected.

Today I was looking at this old photograph in my picture files and Icouldn't believe my eyes.
There was the Young Women's Boarding Home right behind the Biltmore Theater!

And there it is. It fell when the Biltmore was extended to Grand.

755 West Adams Boulevard. William Garland Marshall

They appear in the 1910 census.
From Google Maps it looks as if the Marshall's old house has recently been demolished -a new housing development was under construction when the Google car passed by.

These human interest stories are always interesting -the cameo image of Mr Marshall at the window looks very Chandleresque. Reminds me of The High Window and Mrs Elizabeth Bright Murdock.

The photo has strong visual impact -very evocative of the period.
I have tried Google but have not come across anything concrete relating to
this story.
Does anyone know the background?

When was the Biltmore Hotel addition built T2? I haven't been able to find a date.

The Biltmore Theater was pretty much enveloped by the massive hotel at that point. See the floor plan below.

As most everyone knows, the new Biltmore Tower was built on the former site of the Biltmore Theater.

The car is a rare Ford Model T Touring Car. The real mystery is why? Why in the world would Ford attempt an "upscale" Model T? Who did they think would buy it? That would be like Chrysler making a limousine version of the K-car (Oh, wait. They did do that). Hmmm....I hope one of those classy lassies knows how to change a flat tire.

You know, I don't know. I'd guess pre-war. Historic Hotels of Los Angeles and Hollywood http://www.usc.edu/libraries/subject...orichotels.pdf gives a date of the 1980's which is decades wrong. It was the Tower that went up in '85:

Historic Hotels of Los Angeles and Hollywood

Looks like it was there in '49:

criss cross/UIP

Not that long ago I saw an article about the offices that make up the Grand frontage. They are apparently standing empty. I've failed to find the link again.

Undated, no address. "Auto roller coaster."
Presumably So-Cal related. Thrill ride designed to mimic Mullholland and Wilshire Boulevards, without the pedestrian traffic?

What warranty?

Another undated image without location other than somewhere in Los Angeles.
Suspect this is a Duesenberg parked in Beverly Hills 1937-8. Maybe Wilshire and Beverly Drive. Wild guess.

One can still skate in Culver City (4545 S Sepulveda):

Tellefson Park is so boring. I used to wait there sometimes while my mechanic finished up across the street. There was hardly any place to sit down even, although it's a little better now.
Skating Rink, probably not in Culver City. Date and location unknown. Size = Large. (Doubtful any noir'ers remain alive who might remember this.)

At first glance, I thought there was a traveling circus below the Franklin Avenue Bridge*.

Library of Congress http://www.loc.gov/pictures/

It turns out, the buildings form the campus of the Lycee International School of Los Angeles.

http://virtualglobetrotting.com/

The four circular 'pavilions' were built in 1960 as the Midtown School and were designed by the modernist John Lautner.
The buildings provided airy classrooms and were built on a small scale to suit the needs of children. (the largest circular building
you see in the aerials was added in 1980)

Of course, John Lautner is best known as the architect of the iconic Chemosphere House (1960), built the same year as the Midtown School.

Julius Schulman http://www.archdaily.com/64345/ad-cl...uliusshculman/

The Chemosphere House is situated just off Mulholland Drive on the San Fernando Valley side of the Hollywood Hills.

Unbelievably, the home is only accessible by a funicular (shown on the right).

added note:

*The Franklin Avenue Bridge, where this post began, is better known as the Shakespeare Bridge (built 1926). The future site of the school
is at lower right, just past that wooden fence.
