I'll take the opposite view here. I love seeing new construction close together creating amazing density. This area is going to have some amazing foot traffic in a few years - we may finally get some real progress in living style downtown!

Little annex building with the glass block windows to the south of that gorgeous MTS building on Sherbrook was just ripped down.

I see it is a storefront retail space with affordable rent and a handsome ballet campus building. I’m not opposed to an office tower of course but in a downtown that’s 50% parking lot, it’s a shame not to fill one of them with a rare major project. Those afffordable storefronts are what make downtown livable. More than single use office towers do.

They do have a big warehouse out in the Lindenwoods area and from what I have heard a number of things that where managed in Winnipeg have been moved out east so they may have had too much office space now in Winnipeg.

I notice that. But why tear it down?

That MTS building was the beginnings of original CKY in 1923. That building is historic.

Unfortunately, thanks to Covid, there's an abundance of low rent/old retail space available for merchants. Downtown Winnipeg has a lot of smaller/older/cheaper buildings everywhere in the 1-3 story range. What downtown Winnipeg doesn't have is amazing density! I think this is a welcome change!

Nice! Making room for something new hopefully. Hope the abandoned Palatal building across the street is next.

^^^ yeah, i would love if some of the lots got consolidated (old happenings building and palatal) and another 5-6 floor building shoots up like Sherbrook Flats. So much potential abounds!

While on topic for that particular block, I would really love to see something cool bridge the old MTS building and the heritage one at Sherbrook and Portage via that parking lot. Would be cool if it connected all three buildings.

Agree, lots of potential on that block.

What used to be on that block? for this young'n. It just an empty city block of parking lot, with random shitty fast food spread about. Sherbrook-Portage-Maryland-Broadway. Prime piece of land.

car dealership so it has been under-utilized for some time.
