Kevin, you seem to have a movie or TV clip that applies to just about every situation, no matter how random. I love it.

Lol that was pretty funny..

Of all the designs it could have been why did we end up with that?

Why not this?

Simple...White Lodging did not want to spend $150MM on a 23-story, 301-room convention center hotel.

Kidding aside...I do like the Norfolk Westin design much better. But, with better design comes higher cost.

If it looked like that on all sides, it would be beautiful.

It does have a sort of Euro quality to it on that side.

It's certainly not world class, but it's actually better in person than in print. Decent filler that will provide some street level activity.

The sad thing is if the Magellan tower ever gets built, it will hide the most attractive side from most views. The ugly North side will always be visible since I can't imagine any tower ever being built on 6th Street.

Actually I think the north side will eventually be obscured by potential new highrises in all of those surface parking lots around there. Also, the north side is really facing just empty lots and the homeless shelter, so maybe they didn't feel the need to spend money on an attractive facade that wouldn't be facing the central business district.

San Jacinto is a major south flowing street carrying cars into downtown. The view of the Westin from San Jacinto up around 7th is butt ugly. It is otherwise one of the most interesting views of downtown, and a better north facing facade would have enhanced that experience.

Agreed. I think with other infill in that area it'll take some of the focus off of the ugly sides, though....or at least, I hope.

Well I do like the mirrored windows at least. And I do like the height especially on that block. It doesn't look like it has much of a grand entrance. Overall I'd give it a C+.

Regarding the blank walls: I think the city should consider alternative regulations when it comes to structures built against the property lines. Why not have windows on those sides but designed where if a new tower rises on the next lot, they can simply be removed with little recourse other than loss of natural light. Maybe build hallways on those sides. I'm assuming they do that now with some of these buildings? There is no garentee that anything substantial will be built on those sides and even if it does happen it may be decades.

I can understand residential buildings built from the get go with no windows. Hotels can have outer hallways with windows on those sides and office buildings could do the same.

Well, that's certainly a nice surprise. I expected something boring, like a plain old lobby. I'm sure this restaurant will do well, being nice and so close to 6th Street.
