A team from Ottawa’s Carleton University walked away the winner, with a hometown Fanshawe College squad finishing second.

The competition was a chance to design the old South St. Hospital lands overlooking the Thames River, coveted turf on the downtown’s southern gateway that’s been largely cleared for urban renewal, except for several heritage hospital buildings.

The 12 teams of architecture and urban planning and design students from a dozen schools came away impressed with the prospects for a unique neighbourhood.

“It has the potential to be a second centre for your city, a river centre as opposed to a downtown centre,” said Patrick Condon, a juror and chair of the University of British Columbia’s urban-design program

“You can have two hearts rather than just one,” he said.
