Lots of great wineries in the area, make sure you hit the country when you visit.

Definitely! There's some great scenery in Essex County from what I've seen.

Really? Maybe it's just because I've lived here all my life but I find the scenery, aside from being anywhere near the water is rather boring and mundane in Essex county.

^ Some people seem to like that vast, flat openness of cornfields it seems.

Regarding the air quality, there have only been a handful of smog advisory days in the last 2 years (less than 5). The closures of coal power plants in the area have helped improve things. What you read on Wikipedia about air quality in the area is completely overblown and outdated and should probably be removed.

I was downtown yesterday briefly. I checked out the U of W School of Social work on Pitt and that's coming along nicely. Exterior glass is going up, but no cladding yet. I've yet to see if they've started yet restoring the origional Windsor Star building facade, but the project is coming slow and steady.

Also I noticed fence hoarding going up in front of the old Armouries at the front side on University so they must be getting ready to get moving on that site. I believe the Armouries renovation and the construction of the new media school on the site of the former TBQ adjacent will be happening at the same time? I imagine Freedom Way will just be entirely closed off at both Park & University.

I don't think that they would close off Freedom Way since one of Burger Kings parking lot entrances is on it, but you never know.

There's something kind of depressing in the thought that the first things people see when crossing over from the US are a McDonalds (Ambassador Bridge) and a Burger King (Tunnel).

Yeah, and I really don't think they need both parking lots for the one store, they are never even close to full.

Meh, fast food joints are everywhere. The first thing people see crossing over from the bridge is actually Assumtion Church, one of the oldest churches in Ontario, and the old Burger King across from the Tunnel was demolished and built a block away, to make room for the new tunnel entrance, so it's not even in view of the tunnel now.

Actually I think the first depressing thing you see when you come over the bridge or through the tunnel is Windsor.

And when you cross at the tunnel and enter Detroit, the first thing you usually see is at least one panhandler standing in the middle of the traffic exiting Customs going to Jefferson/Randolph. The first thing you see when you take the bridge headed to Detroit is an abandoned train station without a single intact window. It is what it is. I'd rather see McD's or BK than panhandlers and blight.

When I exited the tunnel into Detroit the first thing I noticed was the Renaissance Center so it's not that bad as a first thing you see when coming to Detroit.

most border crossers will switch to the new bridge in a few years which will have the 401 extension to greet them, which is a huge improvement over the current situation with Huronchurch.

There's really not much on the Canadian side that's all that appealing to greet them at the location of the new bridge. The U.S. side is very bleak with Zug Island being right near the U.S. entry point. On the Canadian side you have a Hydro One gas power plant, some old industrial areas, an aggregate port, and a sewage treatment plant that stinks to high heaven most of the time.

Yeah, the area of the new bridge is pretty industrial and bleak on the American side. At least on the Canadian side there ia a lot of preserved green space, which helps soften the industrial feel in that part of the city. It'll be interesting to see how the area of the new bridge developes once it is open to the public, and if there will be any effect on Olde Sandwich, good or bad.

Yes! What a fucking mess! We're at a hotel now until the building is deemed safe to return to. Our unit was not damaged, thank god, but it might take a while before everything is fixed. I'm hoping we can go back by tomorrow!

Crazyness, and then the next day a fire next door at the Havana smoke shop. That whole block can't catch a break.
