Boardwalk project begins for trail
Crews putting in concrete piers and retaining wall

Executive Director of The Trail Foundation, Susan Rankin, says crews have poured 25 concrete piers, which now are sticking up out of the water.

The work on the water is one phase of the project right now. On land, crews are constructing retaining walls with large limestone blocks.

Further east down Lady Bird Lake, is the staging area for the workers. Heavy machinery and equipment move the parts that will become the extension to the hike and bike trail.

Rankin says The Trail Foundation predicts the project to take 18 months. That projection is from the start date back in October. So, the Boardwalk Trail Project should be open in the spring of 2014.

This, waller creek, and the planetarium are my 3 most anticipated projects. At least 2/3 are actually happening.

And that 2/3 for most anticipated or desired big projects is pretty dang good. So often with these things they are nothing more than dreams.

Very exciting. Thank you Kevin for that update.

No photos to share, but the piers are coming along very nicely. The barge that is installing them is getting closer to I-35, moving from east to west.

Meanwhile, they have been preparing a big land section of the trail halfway between Joe's Crab Shack and I-35. I don't have a plan handy, but the boardwalk must come ashore or have a parallel land segment at some point.

I wonder how they will manage putting in the piers under the I-35 bridge?

I also noticed they had a bulldozer or something working on the south shore way up near the cliff face. I wasn't sure if it was for the boardwalk or what, but I couldn't think of anything else. It was just below that dog park on Riverside.

Boardwalk takes shape along Lady Bird Lake

By Farzad Mashhood
American-Statesman Staff

Austin’s 1.2-mile long boardwalk along the south shore of Lady Bird Lake is taking shape east of Interstate 35, as construction crews have completed building its foundation.

Last week, crews started building the steel structure between some of the columns and will continue to do so, moving west. Crews will then install the concrete decks, handrails and lighting to complete the walkway.

The $21.7 million project began in October and officials have said it will be done in Spring 2014.

Looks like they've started connecting the peirs to each other in front of the amli south shore development... Starting to look more like a walkable structure than just the concrete posts sticking up.

Why not use this opportunity to film some kind of "wipeout" show where people try to jump from one cement block to another without falling into the water? If you make it across, you get a free taco or something. (I keed. I keed.)

Very cool! I'm guessing the columns to the left are for the viewing platform(s)?

^I think so. They'll have a few places where it juts out from the main route as a little resting/viewing spot.

You can see part of the boardwalk heading under the I-35 bridge. Imagine what the views are going to be like!

Here are a few shots of the viewing platforms that jut off from the main route. These were uploaded on May 26.

I cannot wait until this opens, going to ride/walk all over it. It will be amazing how interconnected the trails will be once this and Waller Creek are done.
