Yeah I think its safe to say that its at height or just breached it. The last couple of photosets at least seem to indicate it. Almost there and its presence in the skyline is very noticeable. But it also serves as a reference to how big even WTC4 is. Its hard to forget that its monolithic being overshadowed by 1 WTC, but stick that tower in most American Cities, and it would stick out like a beautiful, healthy, overweight thumb.

I really think thats the issue when it comes to towers in NYC in terms of aesthetics. Its so hard for them to be noticeable. I mean, its getting to the point where a 1000 ft looks small. Even if its bulky, its placement makes or breaks it. Look at 10 Hudson for example. Right now, you can tell its huge. But come in the next 4 years, with 15, 30, 35 Hudson, and others, it will lose its grandiose appearance. But on the street, when your looking up, you can tell its enormous.

P.S. Love the astronomy night with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, is this a new publicity initiative by Larry? Don't recognize the girl though.

Agree Nyguy on "great backdrop": cool scopes, cranes, participants, building(s), and sky. Was there anything not to like?

Not at all (if you like construction).

3 World Trade Center Reaches Supertall Territory

By Evan Bindelglass | New York YIMBY

The new World Trade Center is coming together. In March, the Santiago Calatrava-designed World Trade Center Transportation Hub opened. Liberty Park is due to open this summer. Now, we have news about one of the complex’s skyscrapers. 3 World Trade Center, located at 175 Greenwich Street, has reached supertall height.

A supertall is anything above 300 meters, or 984 feet, in height, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which issues such determinations. Well, 3WTC has passed the 1,000-foot mark, on its way to a final height of 1,079 feet and 80 stories. As of Friday, the concrete had reached 1,001 feet, six inches and the steel was up to 732 feet.

Designed by architect Richard Rogers of the London-based firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the office building will encompass 2.8 million square feet of rentable space. There will be 150,000 square feet of retail across five stories..

As for the office space, some of the signed tenants are GroupM, which will occupy 700,000 square feet, and its child companies MEC and Mindshare. Catalyst and Xaxis will also lease space.

The building was to have risen to 1,168 feet, but two masts at the top were eliminated.

Larry Silverstein’s Silverstein Properties and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey are behind the project. It is expected to open in 2018.

4 World Trade Center and One World Trade Center have been open for sometime. The rebuilt 7 World Trade Center opened in 2006. The design for 2 World Trade Center had shifted from Norman Foster to Bjarke Ingels (Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG), with 21st Century Fox due to move in. That deal has fallen through, but the BIG design might still be what is built.

". . when it comes to towers in NYC in terms of aesthetics . .
Its so hard for them to be noticeable." - Chris
(apologies, Chris, for twisting your quote to fit here) . .

When 3WTC, 2WTC, & CPT . . 3 of NYC's tallest of the tall . . hit the sky, . .
from most points of view, they'll be "skyline-definers" . .
. . But with the insipid, blunt, bunker-box, flat-tops . . that these 3 timid duds offer, . .
devoid of identifiable shape, emblematic hardware, or mystique at the summit, . .
taller though they may be . . we'll end up with a more lusterless skyline silhouette . .
than we could've had otherwise . . .

The mediocrity of this aspect of Manhattan's more generic skyline, . .
will fall so far short . . in every regard, but height . .
of the borough's revered, world-class, romantic 40s skyline . .
which had a somewhat shorter, less numerous, . .
but more exhilarating, coherent lineup of distinctive jagged towers . .
of rigorous imagination & irrepressible character . .

I don't look forward to the irritable feeling that'll be triggered . .
when I have to regard the damaged design of 3WTC on a daily basis . .
If only it weren't such an integral part . . of our most world famous cluster . .
of awesome-less symbolic buildings . . Sad . .
Greed over Excellence . . all over a few pieces of well-crafted steel . .
Such a waste ! . .

Because that's not enough to look at, and because 3 WTC is one of my favorites to photograph at the moment, more pics...

35 shots of 3WTC, yikes ! . .
You're givin' this one, as much love as you give to 30HY, guy . .
Well, I gotta hand it to ya . .
You are a positive booster of development all the way . .
and I can't complain about all the fine visual information you generously provide. .
even though I'm pissed at this tower for getting boring . .

I do hope that those fancy zig-zag trusses, . . the tower's only distinction, . .
are just as well sheathed, & substantial, all the way up the tower . .
just as they are at the base . . There, . the flimsier-lookin' under-truss . .
is dressed in a beautiful crisp, silvery, well-articulated, modern casing . .
where the truss form seems considerably stronger, stouter, . . even Opulent . .

You never know what perk they're scrapping next . .
I just have to believe that something magically bold . .
will somehow happen at the crown anyway . .
I'm not talkin' about delicate, white, horizontal-line night-lighting, either . .

Interesting photos NYGuy. It looks like they had the skylights of the oculus open! Kinda surprising since Tuesday was the rainy day of the week.

A little OT but the light emanating from open skylight of the Oculus (PATH station) contrasts nicely with the dark glass of the Millennium Hotel. Pics 18, especially 19, also 22, 23, 24. Interesting lighting effects due to the clouds.

Back to 3WTC, I have been quite interested in the phasing of the construction work: for example, even though parts of the podium seem close to being finished, see how raw the podium ceiling of the first 2 stories (plaza?) facing the memorial looks, with all the work being done using lifts. Does that have to do with the location of the podium crane that was just recently removed? I am not doubting how this has been worked out. Just curious.
