Clark airport eyed as Asia’s next Aerotropolis
By Reynaldo G. Navales
Friday, December 21, 2012

CLARK FREEPORT --- Tourism officials in the Central Luzon are eyeing Clark International Airport as Asia’s next progressive Aerotropolis.

Department of Tourism (DOT) regional director Ronnie Tiotuico said with the world’s economic center rapidly moving eastward, there is an increasing urgency to develop Clark International Airport into an aviation hub.

Tiotuico said this is the focus of a two-day conference that will be held February 21 to 22 at the Widus Convention Center inside the Freeport.

“The Case for Asia’s Next Aerotropolis” is the theme of the Clark Aviation Conference 2013, a trade gathering that will examine Clark’s compelling case as an aerotropolis, an idea in community planning where airports serve as the center for new cities growing around them.

The conference is organized by Clark International Airport Corp., in partnership with Global Gateway Logistics City, with support from the DOT-Central Luzon.

The event will highlight Clark International Airport’s critical role in easing air traffic congestion in Manila and driving economic expansion in Central Luzon.

It will also identify infrastructure and policy developments at Clark Freeport that are designed to attract airport-related businesses and investments.

Heads of government agencies—including the trade, tourism, and transportation and communications departments as well as the Bases Conversion Development Authority and private-sector representatives will look at Clark’s prospects as an aviation and investment destination in Asia.

AirAsia to hire 250 additional workers for 3 new planes arriving in 2013
By Joey Pavia
Dec 20, 2012

GREAT DESTINATION.
AirAsia CEO Maan Hontiveros and Filipino journalists end their three-day tour of Taipei City with a visit at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial on Wednesday. The Taiwan Department of Tourism and Information hosted the tour.

TAIPEI CITY –
At least 250 more workers, including pilots and cabin crews, will be hired by Philippines’ AirAsia in preparation for the arrival of its three brand-new planes in 2013, AirAsia CEO Marianne Hontiveros disclosed on Tuesday.

Hontiveros, who along with the Taiwan government hosted 12 journalists and six bloggers for a familiarization tour of this capital city from December 16 to 19, said they need “80 to 90” workers for each of the Airbus A-320 that will be delivered to their hub at the Clark International Airport (CIA) in Pampanga beginning April.

Bizmen: 2013 a promising year
By Jovi T. De Leon
Wednesday, December 26, 2012

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PamCham) officials recently expressed optimism that 2013 will be a promising year given the positive parameters in the local economic landscape.

“2013, on my viewpoint, will be a promising year. Growth will continue as we bank on the increasing mobile economy brought about by our overseas Filipino Workers, business process outsourcing and potential sectors like aviation in the Clark Freeport,” said Levy Laus of PamCham chairman.

Laus noted that remittances of OFWs are already running at US$23 billion to about US$24 billion. “We are already No. 3 in terms of inward remittances, next to India and China. Next year, this sector will certainly perk up the local economy,” he said.

He added that aviation will pump in more investments to the province and spur progress.

“Aviation is fast becoming in demand. Currently, as a licensed pilot myself, we have come to know that there is a need for at least one million pilots in the next 4 to 5 years. Then Clark Airport as a premier airport in the country--connected by a fast speed rail system--is already being worked out by the current administration. We continue to have faith because it is just a matter of time. Big businesses and investments are coming into Pampanga. Another factor is that the Governor [Lilia Pineda] is well loved by the people including the business sector she is working well with due to the fact that she is supportive and responsive to our needs,” Laus said.

PamCham’s Rene Romero, meanwhile, said that the influx of money into circulation since October is also seen to boost the local economy.

MANILA, Philippines - Floral prints are a fashion classic that shows no signs of wilting. They are blooming all over in the runways of the fashion capitals of the world, with Rag & Bone showing a slick tapestry of tailored coat silhouettes, Erdun with graphic lace-infused bouquets, and Valentino’s romantic rendition of the trend.

With stylish celebrities like Jessica Alba, Lauren Conrad, Miranda Kerr and Vanessa Hudgens embracing floral fashion, the GTW section of the SM store brings the freshest blooms to adorn key pieces of the season.

And everything’s coming up roses, daffodils, orchids, and daisies at SM with delicate English-garden prints, big and bold patterns, brilliant acid-bright foliage, luxe jewel-tone flowers on dark backgrounds and vivid graphic prints blooming all over. Pack a flower power punch on sleek jackets, pretty pants, stylish shorts, and shift dresses.

Clark airport posts 1.3M passengers
Sunday, January 6, 2013

CLARK FREEPORT - The Clark International Airport (CRK) posted a record of 1.3 million passengers in both international and domestic for 2012.

This is a 71-percent increase from the previous year, making it the fastest growing airport of the country, said Clark International Airport Corporation president and chief executive officer Victor Jose I. Luciano.

In a report to Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, Luciano said the “Clark airport achieved a historical record of 1.3 million passengers for 2012.”

“The Clark Airport achieved an unprecedented growth on the strength of budget travel that encouraged passengers coming from Northern and Central Luzon and as far as Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog to experience Clark,” Luciano said.

“As an airport, Clark has proven its viability, its resilience and robustness,” he added.

Records showed that Clark airport attracted 1,312,979 passengers from January to December in 2012 surpassing the 767,109 passengers in 2011. This is a 71.16 percent increase from the previous year.

International passengers alone accounted for 1,013,096 passengers or a 77 percent of total volume in 2012 compared to 725,023 in 2011.

Luciano said Clark’s domestic passengers also surged when Air Asia, Airphil Express, and Seair-Tiger commenced domestic flights in April last year to the country’s prime tourist destinations.

Domestic passengers reached 299,883 last year or a 613 percent increase compared to 42,086 in 2011.

Last December 2012, Clark airport posted 151,401 passengers compared to 84,541 passengers for the same period in 2011 hitting a 79 percent increase.

Luciano said that Executive Orders 28 and 29 of President Benigno Aquino III boosted the attraction of Clark as alternate airport to foreign and local carriers alike, as airlines were encouraged to fly outside Metro Manila as alternate to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

“It also helped that Clark International Airport was placed under the direct supervision of the DoTC in the December 2011 under Executive Order 64, then Secretary Mar Roxas and now Sec. Abaya did a lot of encouragement and gave full support to Clark when we were made member of DoTC’s Aviation Cluster along with Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA),” he said.

Luciano said they are expecting that the growth will continue this year as the airport’s connectivity to Metro Manila will be improved when a dedicated regular first class bus service commences on January 15, 2013 from Trinoma Mall in Quezon City direct to Clark via Mindanao Avenue then through the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) at a low bus fare of P200 per trip to Clark.

He said Ayala-owned Trinoma Mall has provided a comfortable fully-furnished waiting lounge dedicated to Clark-bound passengers while waiting for their buses. Three bus companies will initially operate the Clark-Trinoma run, a trip that will take only an hour.

Luciano said “the surge in passengers has boosted the financial performance of the Clark International Airport Corporation operator of the Clark Airport.”

“For the first time in its 17 year history, the company will post a very positive balance sheet. Clark was a dormant airport from its inception in 1995 up to 2002 when United Parcel Service (UPS) chose Clark as its Intra-Asia Hub. In the last quarter of 2003 the commercial passenger operations in Clark started with the introduction of international passenger charter flights Asiana Airlines of Korea to Clark,” he added.

AirAsia Philippines alone is expected to carry around five million passengers within the next five to seven years. Clark Airport is AirAsia’s 4th hub in the Asian Region.

The airport is the home of at least eight budget carriers, namely, Air Asia Philippines, Air Asia Berhad Malaysia, Cebu Pacific Air, Airphil Express, Seair-Tiger Airways, Jin Air and Zest Air.

SM, Waltermart join forces
By Doris C. Dumlao
10:01 pm | Monday, January 7th, 2013

Tycoon Henry Sy seeks to cement his leading position in the Philippine retailing and shopping mall businesses by forging an alliance with the Waltermart group of the Lim family.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday, SM Investments said it had entered into a joint venture with the Waltermart group through its subsidiaries SM Retail Inc. and SM Prime Holdings Inc.

The terms of the partnership are still being finalized and thus cannot be disclosed yet, said Cora Guidote, head of investor relations at SMIC.

“This is an opportunity to further strengthen our position in both the mall and retail business,” Guidote said.

The Waltermart group of the family of Wilson Lim has been in the retailing business for over 20 years. Based on its website, it has 17 community malls located in Batangas (Tanauan), Laguna (Sta. Rosa, Calamba and Makiling), Cavite (Carmona, Dasmariñas, General Trias and Trece Martires), Metro Manila (Sucat, Makati, North Edsa and E. Rodriguez), Bulacan (Plaridel, Guiguinto and Santa Maria), Pampanga (San Fernando) and Nueva Ecija (Gapan).
