I don't know how the Planning Commission voted on Tuesday night, but the zoning change is on the City Council agenda for tonight.

They've started to put together some marketing plans.

The Planning Commission passed the site plan on a 7-3-1 vote with restrictions. Only one of the two towers got approved for 185'. The second one can only be 150'. Also, the project is required to have a grocery store and pharmacy.

Did they say why they decided to do that?

How does the neighborhood just get to postpone 2 months?

Also, what are they thinking, limiting to 150 feet along an interstate?

What I find amusing is that some of the neighbors protesting this development are not fourth generation 12th Street residents being pushed out but gentrification, but rather the residents of the row-houses just East of I35. These row-houses were built less than six months ago and are themselves out of scale with the neighborhood. I'm sure their main problem with these building is that they will block their skyline views from their 3rd floor balconies. It's a pretty blatant case of the "Fu*k you, got mine" mentality.

Oh, that's hilarious. And I agree, if the neighborhood can endure those "row houses", then why not the midrises? Neither of them fit the character of the neighborhood, but both represent a maturing and growing neighborhood.

Hate to say this, but I think the developer should back away. They have been super accommodating and patient up to this point. This project has been slowly pared back to nothing.

Yup, and those houses were built in top of city owned land: http://kut.org/post/after-long-wait-...eet-properties

East 12th has improved significantly because of many factors, but the city's redevelopment efforts over the years on East 11th have been considerably more pronounced. The city and associated agencies have bungled up East 12th for a long time: http://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2003-08-29/175333/

I like the design of those row houses and all, but I wish the city had held out for more intensive development than detached SF homes.

This excellent Masters thesis from a UT student goes into some of the older history (since the late '60s): https://repositories.lib.utexas.edu/...=1&isAllowed=y

I think that if it gets built, it will do phenomenally well at that location. If everything goes through, I say build it.

The NIMBYs should at least be honest and adopt a slogan like "Don't block my view Bro'".

It doesn't block their view of downtown towers. It just moves the view closer to them.

Right. And they won't have to go all the way up to their 3rd floor balcony to view them.

The locals should look at the bright side, in that the 150-185' towers will act as a sound wall to block noise from IH-35.

Council member Houston has been getting pretty involved in this project.
