That Lady Bird hotel is probably one of the better solutions to a tricky site. The Rainey district is going to be one truly unique and one-of-a-kind urban neighborhood in the future, and it even already was. That's for sure.

I wouldn't really say it's "facing' rainey, you have all the ugly back of house stuff on that side (electrical vaults, pool equip, trash, etc). But yeah, it does sort of put emphasis on its own central courtyard rather than the street it faces - the rather uninteresting I-35 frontage road.
