Also, what's the plan for the vintage rotating sign? I haven't seen anything about that, but that could be awesome if they restore it, especially if they restore it to it's original state (I believe the "Circles Records" part is just a skin they put on it, and the original Stewart Motor Company signage is still underneath it. Would be incredible to uncover that and restore the neon as well. That might become the best vintage sign in the state if restored.)
They plan on restoring the rotating sign. Snooze is supposed to take up the whole space and part of the upper mezzanine that is inside.

Right. I'm wondering if the restoration will just be getting it working and then putting a new crappy skin on it. Or if they'll try to fully restore it to near original condition (assuming original signage is under the existing Circles Records skin).

Looks like they didn't waste any time pulling the Stewart construction cam down. Would have liked to seen it 100% finished before taking the cam offline.

^ Nobody was opposed to Stewart's construction, just the semi-demolition of a historic building, the developer's early maneuvers, and subsidizing that with a GPLET.

We should not subsidize demolitions with tax abatements. Phoenix is starting to get over that tho and realizing incentives require tit-for-tat negotiations rather than historically selling the farm for anybody that stops by with a rendering.

^ Circles was never listed on the national or local register of historic properties and had been vacant since 2010.

Thinking this thread should be renamed The Stewart or The Stewart/Circles on Central for easy reference when the project is complete.

That is not completely true. I went to 3 of the RAA meetings concerning the development and the building's height was brought up multiple times by local residents and the RAA. The GPLET was the other issue along with residents concerned about the demolition of the "historic" Stewart building that was not on any historical registry. The demo occurred well after initial meetings and just infuriated the locals more. But height was a concern from day 1 of the project and the RAA at the time recommended against the development.

^ Thank you for that. I guess I misunderstood RAA's boots on the ground perspective from what bubbled up to me.

Yea, I remember when local calling the project a "behemoth". OK, Stewart is a pretty bulky building, but I wouldn't really consider it a behemoth although it does stand out pretty much for the area. With Ro2, Duo and a couple of other proposals in the works within a couple blocks of Stewart, it should start blending in better down the road.

/\ Could just be the curing agent and will fade to a normal sidewalk color.

I'm dying to know if the original Stewart Motor Company/Studebaker signage is under the "Circles" records skin. I hope they remove the skin to at least find out (seems like they would need to, it looks to be in rough shape).

If you look on streetview, you can still see what seems to be the original neon tubing at the top of the sign.

The color was just a curing agent. Just saw them taking some of that fencing down. Looks like they might be finishing the landscaping, etc. now.

I'm more interested in when I can stop by to pick up some vinyl.
Which reminds me; I've got a couple of tangled 8-tracks I'd like to replace.

Stewart's grand opening is tomorrow apparently:

In the spirit of the record store that used to be there, the floor plans are named after legendary musical acts, including the Bowie one-bedroom, Nicks two-bedroom and Van Halen studio.

The largest and most expensive plan is the McCartney, a 1,899-square-foot studio with 2½ baths that will set you back $6,240 a month, according the complex’s website.

On the bottom end are the Petty and Ramone, 400-plus-square-foot studios that start at around $1,400 a month.

Residents started moving into the building earlier this month.

The Valley’s fifth Snooze an A.M. Eatery restaurant is scheduled to open at The Stewart later this year.
Glad Tom Petty died before he could live to see himself turned into a 400 sq/ft studio apartment.
