Long range forecast for Moncton and southeastern NB from Environment Canada is for a warmer than normal and drier than normal spring and summer.

God, I hope they're right....

I think this is a good enough reason to resurrect this thread:

Cold enough for you!!!!!

It didn't get above -25C in Moncton today.

I did go out, and since there was no wind and it was sunny, it was in fact tolerable but this sort of temperature is certainly not typical for us. We can have night time lows of -25C, but to have a high temperature of -25C is extraordinary……

Oh well, at least we're going to escape the brunt of the storm tomorrow. We will likely get less than 10 cm in Moncton with gusty winds. Halifax has blizzard warnings out and may receive 30-40 cm.

Having lived in both cities, 40 cm of snow in Moncton is a nuisance. 40 cm of snow in Halifax on the other hand is a national emergency!!

Poor dog hasn't wanted to put her feet on the ground in the past 2 days, even for 5 minutes.

Environment Canada has some pretty detailed weather stats on their website. One of the interesting sets is the count of days per year with snowfall over a given amount. I think they are much lower than people would expect:

Halifax Citadel
> 5 cm: 11.25
> 10 cm: 4.75
> 25 cm: 0.61

In other words, a 25 cm snowfall is expected less than once per year on average. Maybe about every other year once you account for years with multiple major snowfall events.

Here's Moncton (Airport):
> 5 cm: 18.93
> 10 cm: 10.11
> 25 cm: 2.2

Aside from the fact that these are probably much lower than people expect, it's interesting to note that the distribution of the size of events varies a lot from place to place. Halifax's distribution has a heavier than normal slant toward large snow storms, whereas the Prairie cities tend to have a large number of days with less snow.

A couple more really surprising ones. Days per year with > 25 cm snowfall:

Vancouver Airport: 0.13
Edmonton Airport: 0.09

Remember this the next time somebody from the Prairies goes on about how great they are at coping with major snowfalls there! They tend to get cold weather, many days with some snowfall, and a long period of snow cover, but they do not get a lot of big snow storms. This is pretty much to be expected for an area that's far away from major bodies of water.

Since I've been home for Christmas, it's just been storm after storm after storm and so on. Marine Atlantic cancelled all of their crossings yesterday and this morning, so my crossing for tonight will probably be pushed back to Sunday night. Regardless, it's probably for the best considering this is the view outside of my parents' front door right now:

St. John's is now at 40cm with another 5 possible this evening/tonight. It's safe to say that Mother Nature has played a very cruel April Fools joke on all of us. We are beginning our 5th month of winter now and everybody is quite sick of it...

Indeed it was sunny in Moncton this afternoon, but it was heavily filtered sunshine, unable to generate any warmth and the air temperature remained -3C. In addition, to get this tantalizing morsel of sunlight, we had to endure a storm lasting 2 & 1/2 days, with 29 hours of continuous freezing rain and 23 cm of snow and ice pellets!!!

All is not lost though, it got up to 10C in Campbellton this afternoon with brilliant sunshine.

Way to resurrect a dead thread (almost 10 years).

Interesting graphic. You should put this on the Canada section too.

Strange how the US eastern seaboard is more snowy, but the Maritimes is less snowy.

It fits though, I can remember the 1970s as being a particularly snowy period.

Speaking from Saint John I certainly would agree we get far more winter rainstorms than we used to.

Moncton got only a light dusting on both occasions. Our monthly total is probably in the 2-5 cm range.
