Yeah, I figured you were glad to be rid of the cold & snow, but I really enjoyed your winter pictures - from a distance.

I'm shocked that St. John's-ites (is that the nickname?) litter. What the heck! That's very un-Canadian. It's quite common down south, I can tell you.

It's primitive here in a lot of ways. Even our reputation for being friendly - a friend of mine says that's bullshit, we're just nosy. Litter is just one of the most visible ways.

Our name is just "Townie". If you're from St. John's, you're a Townie. If you're from anywhere else on the island, you're a "Bayman". This is sometimes personalized ("Baygirl", etc.) but usually Bayman is used for anyone from anywhere, male or female.

Within St. John's it breaks down by neighbourhood. I live in Rabbittown, so I'm a Rabbittownie (but not a REAL one, because I wasn't raised in this hood). People a few blocks from me live downtown, so they're Downtownies. You can buy bumper stickers with all that shit.

Very interesting. Not surprising that people have those attitudes since St. John's is an isolated place. In any case, your pics make me want to visit St. John's, and I look forward to your updates, Rabbittownie

I'm already planning my next thread in my head.

I'm taking Ayreonaut to St-Pierre-et-Miquelon, France, next weekend. I'm promoting it as a romantic vacation (he's straight, and even if he was gay, he wouldn't touch me, lol). But it's going to be AWESOME. We're sorting our passports, getting our converters so we can plug in our electronics to recharge in European outlets. I'll convert my $ to Euros next week. Ferry is booked. Hotel is booked. It's going to be amazing because St-Pierre is the most urban small town in/near... Canada for sure, and probably ALL of North America.

So I will be there June 19-21. And when I get back, I'll make a thread. But this is where it is:

And here is what it is:

WTF, I didn't know there was a French territory in Newfoundland!

Looks beautiful. Enjoy your trip!

It's not in Newfoundland. It's France. I've been many times. It just happens that it's so close.

They close the whole place for a few hours around lunch, and all summer. French holidays are the holidays. Everyone looks a good 10-30 years younger than people the same age in North America generally. On and on. It's spectacular. But Ayreonaut has never been, so I'm taking him.

6 a.m. the town is deserted except for hundreds, possibly thousands, of people lined up outside the bakeries. You can drink at 14 years old. The cigarettes and booze cost pocket change. It's paradise.

A few quick pics from a work meeting:

You see the white oil tanks on the right side near the top of the hill? See the church below them? Downtown is in a valley between those two points. It's so steep down that you can't even see the tops of our tallest buildings down there.

And a few with my real camera. Sorry for the bad processing on a couple. I'm experimenting now with usually the Manual setting during the daytime, which is new to me... and sometimes the processing comes out wonky and I don't know well enough what to do yet. But I'll get it.

Haven't been taking many pictures. It's been miserable.

In the entirety of July month, we spent only 23 hours total above 20C (68F). Compared to 356 last year.

So I've been hibernating.

But anyhow, some new ones from a week or so ago and last night...

We went out tonight but wrapped up early. A few quick mobile pictures of the nightlife in St. John's when it's our coldest summer in a generation.

And a quick video clip...

So, today was Royal St. John's Regatta Day - a holiday in the city.

It's the oldest continuing sporting event in North America and is held every year on the first fine Wednesday in August. That morning, a committee decides if the races will go ahead or be postponed - making them the only unelected group to decide a public holiday in Canada.

Everyone in the city plays "Regatta roulette" the night before by partying hard downtown and then, basically, checking to see whether they get to go to bed or have to go to work.

A few pictures from today...

The races are held at Quidi Vidi Lake, formerly an American military base called Fort Pepperell.

Sweet pictures! Thanks for the updates, Signal.

I see Summer is definitely over St. John´s, as seeing people´s clothes...

Love your city, very animated and lively by this season.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Thanks, guys.

I had to run out to Bay Roberts (about an hour away) today. Took two pics there and then back in the city.

I like the flag colors on the boat! What do the colors mean again? I know you explained this unofficial flag or whatever it is, but I don't remember and am too lazy to look for where you mentioned it before.

The pink represents England, the white Andrew's Cross of Scotland, and the green, Ireland. So basically it's an anti-Welsh flag. Kidding.
