hkskyline's 2016 in Seoul

Seoul has been almost an annual pilgrimage for me. Having done the key tourist sites over and over again, I've decided to leave the city centre and immerse into local life. Mangwon Market doesn't feature prominently in guidebooks, but it is a great place for an authentic local grocery shopping experience. Exit the subway station and you will see stalls selling fresh produce on the short walk to the market already.

The market is covered so inclement weather can't stop you from buying food for the day.

Ginseng is actually a famous North Korean export.

Several years ago, I enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Park Hyatt in Gangnam. I returned with a better camera this time to capture the views, although the weather did not co-operate. In the distance is the city's new tallest building.

The appetizer came and it looked like a flower pot instead of a fresh salad!

Impressed, I continued with appetizer part 2. The moisture and softness were just right!

Then the seafood main course arrived.

To finish off a great meal - ice-cream with honeycomb. This isn't something I can easily get. Most restaurants wouldn't have honeycomb in stock.

There were a few more luxury hotels in the distance. I would need a lot more time to try them all out!

Yeouido has seen some new developments, including a new mall and office complex called IFC. I wonder whether this was named after the landmark development in Hong Kong. There seems to be a lot of IFC's sprouting up all over China as well.

I couldn't resist and went up for a drink with a view.

Every now and then, I do an inventory count and back up my photos. I noticed a large folder that has not been processed and apparently, there is a huge museum I visited but I haven't posted those photos on my website. Better late than never ...

On a grey day, I headed to the National Museum of Korea to explore its exhibits for a good part of the afternoon. The museum is located in a new building that opened in 2005 with 3 floors of artifacts.

I was chaperoned to a few very well-done museums in the North but they focused on revolutionary and anti-American themes. I didn't particularly see historic artifacts like this museum though. Worth going to both sides of the DMZ I suppose ...
