Potsdamer platz reminds me of The Hague, really classy stone facades, Berlin will look amazing if they build their towers in this style, it's better than all the glass wall towers going up everywhere else in the world. On the subject of Germany, if I could pick two towers from Europe that I would love to have built in London it would be the commerzbank and messeturm, they're very tall (only Germany and UK have REAL tall towers in the EU, 250m+), they have fantastic designs, the messeturm starts out with a square shape base, then further up it forms into a circular shape as it rises, then it comes out at the top with a pyramid shape crown, really interesting tower to look at, unique, and it's got soar, real soar. The commerzbank is one of Norman fosters masterpieces, it is another tower with a complex shape and form and great cladding. The spanish tried to copy the design for one of their towers in Madrid, but it was more basic and simple looking and didn't come out as good as the commerzbank.
I do also love the city of capitols twin towers in Moscow, its a simple but attractive shape, great height and has a fantastic LED night lighting. But when it comes to my favourite towers in Europe, it's definitely the shard and leadenhall towers in London, perfect beauty, beautifull shape, insanely expensive materials, (worth it) incredible quality, best cladding I've ever seen and completely unique towers.

Israeli emigration to Berlin exposes zeitgeist of economic anxiety

Quote:
For many years after World War II it was taboo for Israelis to move to Germany. These days Berlin is among the top destinations for those priced out of housing and struggling with grocery bills. And for people whose forefathers were German Jews, Berlin makes sense because it's easy to get dual citizenship. The number of Israelis in the city has risen by about 40 percent since 2006, Berlin authorities say.

A question for the Berlin forumers here. What's the power of the Ortsteile in Berlin? Do they have a budget of their own? Do they have administrative offices (amt)? Do you ever need to visit the Ortsteile offices if you live in Berlin?

Thanks.

The 95 Ortsteile (Neighbourhoods) only had administrative importance before 1920 when these entities were independent counties or cities. After the creation of Greater Berlin the Ortsteile were mainly used for statistical purpose and serve the citizen for geographical identification. The lowest ranking administrative entity in Berlin is the Bezirk (District/Borough). After a reform in 2001 Berlin created 12 Bezirke. Within the Bezirke the Bürgeramt (Citizens Office) is one of lowest ranking official service centers.

Also, another question: I see in the elections to the Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin, there exist some Landesliten and some Bezirkslisten. Apparently only Die Grüne, Die Linke and the Piraten had Landeslisten, while the CDU and SPD had Bezirkslisten. Why is that?? Why didn't the CDU and SPD have Landeslisten instead of Bezirkslisten?

Can´t say. The Landesliste is to my knowledge the decisive one for every party.
I can only guess why the 2 biggest parties in Berlin also have Bezirkslisten. Maybe because of the bigger pool of staff the SPD and CDU are able
to uphold Bezirkslisten, while the smaller parties can only maintain one "list" for the whole city. But thats only guessing…..

Apparently the answer to this riddle is here: http://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/be...de/765926.html

But I haven't understood everything.

Besides, according to the article (from 2006), they were supposed to abolish the Bezirkslisten by 2011, but they haven't done it. Why?

Also, I don't know how they can allocate the Mitglieder to each party in the Abgeordnetenhaus, given that some parties have Landeslisten and some parties have Bezirkeslisten. How do they then decide how many Mitglieder each party gets?

German again: Bay Area Jews reclaim citizenship - JWeekly.com
Quote:
In the past two decades, however, Germany has become a country that people flock to instead of flee from.
In addition to the tens of thousands of Jewish émigrés who have streamed in from the former Soviet Union, Berlin’s reputation as an artistic, tolerant mecca continues to attract young Israelis — as many as 20,000, according to some estimates — as well as American Jews. Germany’s total Jewish population is estimated at 104,000, not including another 150,000 former Soviet émigrés who do not affiliate with the Jewish community.
