WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE SOME KITSCHY HOMAGE TO THE PAST.

How about a 21st Century Station befitting of a growing global metropolis.

To match the Colonial-era subways of course.

I can understand wanting to do so at a place like 5th Street right at the nexus of Brick-ville.

Other stations certainly call well for more modern design touches. Also remember that brick can't be that expensive and that's always the main factor.

Staffing and equipment problems, increased ridership add up to on-time woes for consistently unreliable Regional Rail.

As long as they don't end up calling it "Verizon" station or something like that.

If Verizon, or Comcast, or whomever, wants to put up the money for it, I say let them call it whatever they want.

You won't be seeing them for the next several years minimum. There are a ton of actions that SEPTA needs to take before new vehicles even begin to arrive including retrofitting existing facilities to handle what will surely be articulated LRVs - not the current single end K-cars. I don't know if changes need to be made to the power delivery system if the new LRVs are equipped with pantographs instead of trolley poles.

Thanks

It seems they could just keep using trolley wheel pickup like Toronto did with their new Bombardier cars. After all why fix what isn't broken?

Crum Creek Viaduct Opens

They are basically constructing the new bridge to the south of the existing one and will then slide it over once the existing structure has been removed.
With the Media/Elwyn line reopening from Swarthmore back to Elwyn yesterday, here is a time lapse of the new bridge superstructure being slid onto the previously constructed substructure.

How are the Kawasaki subway cars of the Broad Street Line holding up?
I recall them being replaced back in 1980.

As for the Market-Frankford Line, are those cars as reliable as when they were new?
Just the thought of replacing aging fleet seems very expensive.

They're still going strong. I'm not sure if they've been overhauled since they went into service but going into service in 1983 they're literally as old as I am and probably have another decade of service life if we're going by the lifespan of the M3s on The El.

The M4s on The El have a number of issues and they're approaching the halfway mark of their service life.

I recall when this fleet went into service, introducing air conditioning motors on the roof.
The old fleet had just fans, blowing hot air during the summer months.

The Kawasaki cars serving the Broad Street Line ran a top speed of 55 MPH.

I recall riding those old cars down to the stadium back in the day to see a Phillies game or the Spectrum for when the Harlem Globetrotters played.

I've always wished the subway cars in NYC were upgraded, in particular: the Q,W,A,F, etc. were some of the old fleet back in the day!
In particular, we always had the old fleet until the 4,5,6 lines on Lexington Ave got the new cars. I loved them as much as the Broad Street cars (believe me).
