A Forget-me-Not (our WWI equivalent of the Poppy) for every member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who died in WWI is being installed on the grounds of the Arts and Culture Centre leading up to the absolutely massive Beaumont Hamel Centennial commemorations to be held on July 1, our Memorial Day.

Tacky as fuck, really, but I love the sentiment.

The Skater statue unveiled at Bannerman Park in St. John's

Quote:
The Bannerman Park five-year revitalization project has come to an end with Friday's unveiling of The Skater.

"This is going to be what we call the final jewel in the crown of Bannerman Park," said Jennifer Guy, co-chair of the Bannerman Park Foundation.

Sculptor and visual artist Morgan MacDonald — who has made many prominent statues, including The Rower at Quidi Vidi Lake and the Home From The Sea statue in Elliston — created the latest addition to the park.

"I was given a blank slate to come up with something fun and something that would capture not so much the attention of adults, but something that the kids could call their own," MacDonald said.

The statue was donated by philanthropist Elinor Gill Ratcliffe, the foundation's main donor and patron.

In his acknowledgements, MacDonald thanked Gill Ratcliffe for her vision and the young girl named Anna, who was the inspiration and model for the piece.

"There were many fidgety hours spent getting the pose just right, and drained iPod batteries, so I'd also like to thank Anna for being ever so patient and not packing up and leaving," he said.

"I was thinking about it," Anna quickly chimed in from the audience at the statue's unveiling.

"The Loop is a lovely, unique feature in the city and this sculpture will no doubt be featured in many selfies taken in the park," said St. John's Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth.

The Bannerman Park Foundation, a volunteer committee of citizens, was established to revitalize Bannerman Park and restore it as a cherished city landmark for future generations.

The foundation's contribution to the park include "The Loop" ice skating trail, the Rotary splash pad and the Garden of Memories.

I don't know if it's just an unflattering angle, I'll have to check it out.

Douglas Coupland's "The Golden Tree". A full size replica of the hollow tree in Stanley Park currently being installed outside MC2 condos on Cambie and Marine in Vancouver.

This sculpture shall become a major landmark for Montréal's new gateway, the brand-new Robert-Bourassa boulevard. As you can guess, the artist (Jaume Plensa) is the one who did Wonderland, in Calgary (the big head in front of The Bow).

The Guardian covered our traffic control boxes.

Art and urban infrastructure: the traffic control boxes of St John's – in pictures

St John’s, in Newfoundland and Labrador, is known for its colourful buildings, but Instagrammer Ian Gidge captures the city’s bright street art, in particular its painted traffic control boxes.

An interesting CBC report on a new commissioned piece in Toronto by British street artist, Phlegm. The mural is eight stories tall.

Wow! What was there before that boulevard?

It was an ugly elevated highway. A few before/after can be seen here.

Castlegar's SculptureWalk is in its 4th year and features over 50 sculptures placed outdoors mostly around our downtown. Last year Castlegar was named Sculpture Capital of Canada.

The fifteenth and last mural of our mural trail has been unveiled in the weekend. When it is lit by sunlight, I swear the illusion is perfect. Although not the most historically significant*, I believe it has the greatest potential to become iconic, especially since it can make great selfies and #sherbylove is a very popular hashtag here.

*It only features Madame Bou, an old and mysterious woman who recently died. She used to wander around downtown Sherbrooke, saying “Bou!” (the French equivalent to “Peekaboo!”) to anyone she would encounter.
