I believe putting yourself in the shoes of other people is good and viewing problems or issues from multiple perspectives makes for better decisions. However, I am a logical person and putting myself in the shoes of someone who cares more about a Hooters or Taco Cabana than reducing parking lots and improving the community, I just don't get it.
Those businesses could easily move back into the ground floor retail if they so desired. I can understand fighting for something like PeterPan, that is an Austin icon, locally owned, and you can't just replace it in some random VMU project. But generic run of the mill restaurants are a dime a dozen and can easily move back into the location that is displacing them.
I do understand places can be priced out of the new development, an example of both sides of this being Lamar Plaza. Still why wasn't there more NIMBY against the Lamar Plaza redo when some of the long-time local businesses would be priced out? I am for the project, but I just can't understand the motivation for which projects cause a stink with certain groups besides solely the height of the building and maybe it is that simple. I still can't believe the Catherine managed to fly under the radar.
