Continuing transformation of downtown Houston

Looks like they are about to add significantly to their downtown residential population. This features just some of the residential projects that are currently under construction in the CBD.

I got a tour of SkyHouse Houston a few months back. It was really nice but I still have trouble envisioning living Downtown. I don't think the city is quite there yet when it comes to amenities.

I'd love to see statistics about what's under construction in greater Downtown, particularly on the residential side.

There's several massive new towers going up in addition to older buildings being retrofitted into residential. Downtown Houston has exploded in residential development in the last 5 years. Once these are nearing completion, I think we will see more retail/ restaurants follow to capture the rising population. Right now, it's just not there but they are coming.

That's good info, though I wish it was clearer which were underway.

It looks like a few nodes could be in the making if everything gets built. Nodes are a exactly the way to be successful. Services can concentrate in the same way. A critical mass can be developed. The the next round builds upon that.

I live right in the middle of downtown, and while I agree that Houston is just not quite there yet in terms of overall amenities, I still manage to have just about everything I need within walking distance, or at least within a 5-10 minute car trip at max.

Actually that photo was posted about 40 years ago. There are more updated photos we could post now.

Even then, the skyline was nice, although out of view of the photo. I worked downtown during the summer of 1974, and the skyline overall was photogenic already. But that particular side was indeed mostly parking lots which replaced some beautiful old structures. That side still has too many lots, but it has been changing rapidly and may become the best side of the CBD soon.

I wish all of Houston's skyscrapers were Downtown or close by, especially the Williams Tower.

That's one thing that makes Houston rather unique is that there are clusters of skylines; downtown, greenway, TMC, uptown, westchase, etc. Some vantage points, you can get a good view where some appear to merge as one sprawling skyline, downtown, greenway, uptown...

I don't really see how that makes Houston unique when there are other cities that have multiple skylines as well.

Such as Buckhead in Atlanta in addition to the Downtown and even Sandy Springs skylines. The skyscrapers being all over the city make it look like a disorganized mess TBH. If one of them were in a sister city, it'd be different. I also wish there was a signature landmark/structure like the Space Needle or Gateway Arch.

Getting back to the thread though, I can only hope the city becomes more residential as time goes on and not just a place people make a quick visit to.

No other city has buildings like the Transco, or other 500 footers outside downtown.
