from those pics it looks like it's taller than it's classic era neighbors one grand central and chanin now, yes?

anyone know or can guess -- what's the next direct neighbor building it will surpass and when?

Metlife reminds me of some dystopian city. It's a very oppressive building.

I like the retro-futuristic aspect of it, but I can understand why people hate it too!

I think the fact that MetLife was built right on top of Grand Central and it straddles Park Avenue makes it a favorite punching bag for many. It's a brute of a building and unabashedly big. Can't wait to see One Vanderbilt standing right next to it.

Looks like its 400' roughly using Metlife at 808' as a reference. Still has ways to go, and in post #2562, you get a grasp of its size.

"retro-futurism" = great word, great design concept . .
that much square footage never looked so good . .
and what MetLife's overall shape & texture do with light,
especially at certain times of day . . magnificent ! . .

BTW, what are they calling the old MetLife . .
(the 700 ft tower on Madison Sq., now a hotel) ? . .

Looks as if our One Vanderbilt supertall has hit its stride . .
KPF's ESB-ish glass tower here, is certainly
"retro-futuristic". . in the best possible way . .
though I wouldn't mind having a large vertical
stainless-steel component integrated into all that glass . .

That diagram seems deceptive only in that it shows how much has been done, without context of time taken to do it.

There's around 60+% to go--i.e. more to do that already done--but the tapering nature of this tower should make it seem as if it will have finished sooner than perhaps thought.

Know what I mean?

Definitely -- literally a little less material on each additional floor -- the vertical rise should accelerate month to month.

But I also wonder at what floor one of the two central cranes drops out, along with some elevator shafts. The ratio of usable floor area to elevator shaft area keeps shrinking with each additional floor, too.
